Non-payment 1,456 power connections have been disconnected by Pesco in the last few days.

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) has handed over a list of 9,806 defaulters across the province to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

The defaulters, including domestic, industrial and commercial consumers, collectively owe Rs7.16 billion to Pesco, which currently faces a financial crunch and is incurring losses of around Rs3 billion every month.

“Non-payments are as high as Rs1 million in certain cases,” informed Pesco spokesperson Shaukat Afzal. In the last three days, Pesco has disconnected 1,456 power connections due to non-payment of dues, he added.

According to Afzal, connections for 408 consumers were restored after they paid their dues, which amounted to Rs32 million. If defaulters do not pay their dues immediately, “the company will not only disconnect their line, but NAB will also initiate stern action against them, including arrest and confiscation of their property.”

Action will also be taken against those found guilty of using illegal power connections. Pesco officers will be scrutinised for not being able to carry out proper checking in their assigned localities, said Afzal.
