KARACHI:

CEO Harvest Tradings Ahmad Jawad has said Pakistan has not achieved 200,000 tons in kinnow export which is alarming, adding that the government must concentrate on Central Asia, Africa and ASEAN region for the export of Pakistani kinnow for 2013-14.

In a statement, Jawad said the planners need to realize that there are certain areas where the private sector cannot help, like imposing Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures for food safety legislation to ensure compliance of fresh produce for better access to global markets.

He highlighted the unique but unsophisticated network of up to six or seven intermediaries between the primary source (producer and growers) and the end user, and  the lack of adequate marketing and cold storage facilities which results in 30% of the produce spoiling before reaching the consumer.
