KARACHI:

The first vice-chancellor of Dawood University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Dr Faizullah Abbasi, will take charge of his office today.

The institution, which was formerly known as Dawood College of Engineering and Technology (DCET), received university status recently on February 27, when the Sindh Assembly passed an act.

A former mining and metallurgical engineering head at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Dr Abbasi was appointed as the vice-chancellor of DUET through a notification issued on Tuesday by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan.

After completing a degree in mechanical engineering, Dr Abbasi did his post graduation in production management from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and a doctorate from Sheffield City Polytechnic, United Kingdom. Apart from serving as Sui Southern Gas Company managing director, he has more than 25 years of teaching, research and administration experience in the field of engineering.

Prior to him, Dr Mohammad Ali Shaikh - the vice-chancellor of Sindh Madressatul Islam University - had the additional charge of DCET principal for almost two years. He renounced this position on March 9 after the college became a university. “[The government should] consider appointing a vice-chancellor for the new engineering university at the earliest in accordance with the Section 13 of Dawood University of Engineering and Technology Act 2013,” he had written to the provincial chief secretary.
