ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday said that it would welcome foreign election observers after completion of due formalities.

These assurances were given to foreign diplomats at a briefing organised at the Foreign Office to inform them about the government's policy, procedures and code of conduct for foreign observers during the upcoming general elections.

Senior representatives of the Election Commission of Pakistan, ministries of foreign affairs, interior and information and broadcasting gave the briefing.

The diplomats were informed that the government was committed to free, fair and transparent elections.

They were assured that all steps would be taken to facilitate the foreign observers during their stay in Pakistan.

The ECP had last week released a code of conduct for observers.

Kudos - independent observers will go a long way in establishing credibility and the rules outlined by the ECP appear to be reasonable.
