FAISALABAD:

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Wednesday told a gathering of more than 1,000 people at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) that the Transparency International had declared the metro bus project and the laptops and solar lamps schemes corruption-free.

The chief minister also distributed laptops among 2,575 students at the university.

He later, presided over the foundation-laying ceremony of the Government College University Faisalabad’s new campus on Jhang Road. He also inaugurated a children’s complex, a social security medical college at Susan Road and a mega water supply project. He also announced to upgrade the Government College for Women, Madina Town, to university level.

Speaking at the UAF, the CM said that he also planned to start metro bus services in Faisalabad, Rawalpindi and Karachi if the PML-N was voted into power in the general elections.

“The country is experiencing the worst ever …darkness and dejection.”

He urged the people, especially the youth, to vote for his PML-N.

“Don’t call me Shahbaz Sharif if I back out of my commitments,” he said.

He said the Punjab government’s focus was educating the youth because it realised that “only a literate generation could pull its country out of crises”.

He said the laptops, the solar lamps and the youth festival were part of the message and support for the youth so that they could be prepared to face global challenges.

He claimed that during Nawaz Sharif’s days as a prime minister in 1990, the then Indian finance minister Manmohan Singh had admitted to following policies introduced by the former.

He said recently, the chief minister of Uttar Pardesh in India had said that he was distributing laptops among students by following the success of Shahbaz Sharif’s initiative.

Talking about the Metro Bus Service in Lahore, he said it would change the lives of the poor.

“About 125,000 people benefit from this service everyday,” he said.

He said the service had bridged the gap between the upper and the lower class. He said after completing his tenure as the chief minister, he was satisfied about the steps his government had taken for the welfare of the people.

“I have presented myself for accountability. If corruption worth a penny is proved against me, I will accept any punishment people suggest.”

He said he was certain that the fate of the country would change for the better if the PML-N was voted into power in the general elections.

The chief minister also distributed documents giving proprietary rights among residents of some squatter settlements.

Later addressing the inaugural ceremony of a Rs5.9 billion water supply project in collaboration with the French government, Sharif praised the French government for their support.

Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan, French Ambassador Philippe Thiebaud, Water and Sanitation Authority Vice Chairman Khawaja Muhammad Islam and former MNA Chaudhry Sher Ali were also present.
