Abid Saqi wins LHCBA elections

Abid Saqi, backed by Asma Jahangir, other groups elected as president. Ghulam Sarwar Nahang elected as vice president.

Candidates backed by People's Lawyers Forum and other groups have emerged victorious in the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) elections, Radio Pakistan reported.

According to the results‚ Abid Saqi has been elected as President of LHCBA while Ghulam Sarwar Nahang has been elected as Vice President. Baleeghuz Zaman and Usman Sher Gonaal have been elected as General Secretary and Finance Secretary respectively.

Earlier‚ the polling for LHCBA annual elections for term 2013-14 was held peacefully. A large turn out was witnessed despite rain.

Four candidates were in the run for the slot of the LHCBA president, but Saqi, supported by Asma Jehangir’s Independent Lawyers' Group, People's Lawyers Forum‚ Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Lawyers Forum‚ Awami National Party Lawyers Forum and a large number of young lawyers among many lawyers' groups and clans came out on top.

Other contenders for the spot included Syed Muhammad Shah backed by Hamid Khan-led Professional Group, Shafqat Mahmood Chohan (independent) and Sajjad Husain Bhatti (independent).
