GUJRANWALA: An anti-terrorism court in Gujranwala on Wednesday extended for seven days the judicial remand of the former district police officer, Waqar Chohan, and five officials caught in connection with the lynching of two brothers.

The investigative officer, Hameedullah Khan, presented the former DPO before the court without handcuffs, while the accused officials –Nazir Hussain, Bashir, Akram, Naseer and Muhammad Yasin – were produced in handcuffs.

The court showed anger on the officer for not presenting the challan on time.

The court directed the joint investigation team to include the report prepared by Kazim Ali Malik in the file of the case.

Waqar Chauhan stated before the court that he was made a scapegoat. He said he had nothing to do with the incident and that he was implicated to silence public outcry.

NA standing committee on human rights:

The National Assembly standing committee on Human Rights on Wednesday continued its inquiry into the Sialkot lynching incident for the second consecutive day. The committee members met the family of Mughees and Muneeb in Hajipura and that of Muhammad Bilal and residents in the Buttar village. They recorded their views over the issue.

They also visited the place where the brothers were killed by the mob in the presence of the police officials. Talking to the media, the committee chairman,  Riaz Fatiana, insisted that the accused should be brought to task. The delegation offered fateha at the house of the deceased brothers and assured their family of an efficient and transparent inquiry into their killings.

Fatiana said that the authorities should ensure that a decision is reached in time and that speedy justice is provided to the aggrieved family.
