Paul Scholes has claimed that Premier League champions Manchester City will never replace Liverpool as Manchester United’s biggest rivals, according to Sky Sports.

Despite Liverpool’s lack of success since their last title, an incredible 23 years ago, Scholes believes City still have a long way to go before they can overtake the Anfield club in stature.

“Liverpool probably haven’t done as well as they’d have liked over the last few years — and they’d probably admit that,” said the veteran midfielder. “But they’re definitely still right up there, it’ll always be right up there. Whether Manchester City have overtaken Liverpool now (as United’s biggest rivals), I don’t know...it’ll probably take years for City to create what Liverpool have done. But historically, Liverpool are our biggest rivals, they’re always the biggest games and the best atmospheres. But I’m sure City will run them close.”

Meanwhile, the 38-year-old also said that he is glad to have come out of retirement, with a year having now passed since his comeback appearance against City.

“I just wanted to come back playing, and I’m glad I did. At the time, there were a lot of injuries and I thought maybe I could help, so I tried to. I played quite often during the second half of last season. Unfortunately we just fell short of winning the league; that was disappointing, but I’m glad I came back.”

Manchester United will take on Liverpool on Sunday at Old Trafford in what is considered to be one of the fiercest clashes around the world.
