Remembering a legend: Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s 269th Urs celebrations to begin on December 28

An international conference has been organised as a part of the three-day festivities.

KARACHI: The 269th Urs celebrations of Sufi Sindhi poet Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai will begin on December 28 at Bhit Shah, about 50 kilometres north of Hyderabad. The celebrations will continue for three days.

Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Sindh Assembly Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, Culture Minister Sassui Palijo, MNA Pir Aftab Shah Jilani and Antiquities Minister Makhdoom Jamiluz Zaman will attend the celebrations.

The culture department’s secretary, Abdul Aziz Uqaili, said the security plan has been mapped out. He added that delegates from Iran, India and Germany have been invited as guest speakers for the second international conference on Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai being organised as a part of the celebrations. Renowned scholars, poets, and writers from all provinces of Pakistan have been invited to participate in the event as well.

The culture department is also organising a ‘sughar kachehry’ (conference of folk poets) and ‘mach kachahry’ (bonfire gathering of folk poets) on the first day of the Urs. There will be musical evenings on all three days at which renowned singers Abida Parveen and Sanam Marvi will perform.

Talking about the efforts taken by the department to make the event sucessful, Muhammad Ali Manjhi, the director-general of culture, said that 17 new books on Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai have been published and all of them will be launched during the three-day celebrations.
