GILGIT: The manager of a National Bank of Pakistan [NBP] branch in Gilgit has been accused of obtaining promotion on a fake degree and amassing millions of rupees in kickbacks.

The allegations were levelled against Akbar Hussain by the president of Peoples Youth Organisation Saif Ullah, who also demanded an inquiry into the matter. Talking to reporters at a press conference at Gilgit Press Club on Wednesday, Saif Ullah said, “How can a manager become a millionaire? Akbar Khan has amassed property worth millions of rupees through illegal means and I can prove it.”

He said that a hefty amount was present in the manager’s Soneri Bank and Alfalah Bank accounts in Gilgit, in addition to over Rs8.4m in Citibank, Rawalpindi.

Accusing Akbar Khan of having a fake MBA degree, he demanded its verification and said that enquiries against the manager had been held in the past too but his “influence” had protected him.
