RAWALPINDI:

Pakistan Railway police on Wednesday arrested one of its retired senior superintendents of police (SSP) after a trial court rejected his pre-arrest bail plea in a case of irregular appointments.

After Special Judge Iftikhar Ali on Wednesday dismissed the plea of Javaid Khan, the accused was arrested by the Railway police from outside the courtroom.

Khan is accused of appointing eight constables and promoting one of his relatives from head constable to assistant sub inspector in violation of the relevant rules and regulations in 2009.

Three different FIRs were lodged against him, but the department only proceeded against him after he retired last year.

Represented by Advocate Sheikh Ahsanuddin, the accused maintained before the court that he was being victimised by some senior Railway police officers.

The former SSP said he made all appointments following rules and regulations and that the constables that were removed had gone to Federal Services Tribunal to get reinstated.

During arguments, his lawyer claimed that SSP Khan was being victimised by a serving deputy inspector general of the Railway police for some personal reasons.

Advocate Sheikh argued that under the law, only the Federal Investigation Agency could investigate matters involving wrongdoing by any bureaucrat, but in case of Khan, the Railway police itself was prosecuting its former officer.
