India counters China map claims in a tit-for-tat move

NEW DELHI: India is stamping its map on visas given to Chinese visitors, an Indian official said Saturday, after China began issuing passports showing disputed territories as its own.

“We have started issuing visas with India’s map as we know it,” said a foreign ministry official, who did not wish to be named, declining to comment further.

India’s tit-for-tat action comes after China began issuing new biometric passports showing Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai China – regions that New Delhi claims – as part of Chinese territory.

And the response comes amid already strained ties between the two Asian giants.

Beijing has also included disputed islands in the South China Sea in the map outline on the new passports, angering both the Philippines and Vietnam, as well as areas including two of Taiwan’s most famous scenic spots.

Early this week, the Philippines foreign secretary wrote a protest note to the Chinese embassy and the Vietnam government said it has also lodged its objections with Beijing.

India’s The Hindu newspaper said the Indian government had decided not to take up the issue formally with China.

“It feels it will be better to speak through actions… than words,” the newspaper quoted an unidentified government official as saying.

Beijing has attempted to downplay the diplomatic fallout from the recently introduced passports, with a foreign ministry spokeswoman saying the maps were “not made to target any specific country”.

The disputed border between India and China has been the subject of 14 rounds of fruitless talks since 1962, when the two nations fought a brief, bloody war over the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.

China’s build-up of military infrastructure along the frontier has become a major source of concern for India, which increasingly sees Beijing as a longer-term threat to its security than traditional rival Pakistan.

India is also wary of increased Chinese activity in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh which New Delhi sees as within its sphere of influence.

    Hehehe.

    New cold war.

It’s good as long as it remains cold. China has far fewer friends among its neighbors and other countries. In fact only real friends of China are the failed states or terrorist states or both.

Given this situation, China would rather be happy changing maps on it’s atlas than on real world.

China does a good job of making new enemies. Their only remaining allies left on the Western Pacific are the North Koreans. The rest (Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and the Philippines) are already within the US orbit.
Trying to forcefully implement its ridiculous 9 dash claim, which completely ignores the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), would only result in the other Pacific Rim nations finally creating a grand security alliance, which is exactly what China’s military men and politicians were trying to prevent.

seems as if China alone is no longer aggressive India too has became aggressive against China, earlier India uses words only but this and previous incidences shows India no longer is interested in words but rather uses actions.for ex cancelling military delegation visit, sidelining Chinese protest on ONGC Videsh, expanding foot prints in east asia, development of new and powerful ICBM and BMD systems, this latest tit for tat retaliation over passport map row, yesterday’s successful tests of multiple interceptor missiles etc just reminds of India’s designs.

It is China’s interest to have a friendly relation with India . See the result of enemosity , the condution of Pakistan now willing to have friendship with China at all term and condition , even after loosing her sovereignity .
China should develop as a dignified nation in Asia .

“China has far fewer friends among its neighbors and other countries.”

Lets see how many friends India has in her neighbor:

1- China – fought a war and territorial disputes.
2- Pakistan – fought 3 wars and territorial disputes.
3- Sri Lanka – fought a clandestine war there using LTTE and other terrorist outfits.
4- Bangladesh – water and immigrant disputes, hostile public opinion.
5- Nepal – policy and diplomatic tensions on various issues.
6- Bhutan – policy and diplomatic tensions on various issues.
7- Sikim – annexed by force.

The so called string of pearls China built to contain India has crumbled. Myanmar has soured relations with China. Bangladesh, Nepal & Sri Lanka are playing it smart & do not want to antagonize India. The only true ally China has left is Pakistan which is also at risk because of support for islamic unrest in Xinjiang.

On the other hand China is already in a suffocating grip . It has foolishly kicked off territory disputes with India, Vietnam, Philippines, Japan & Taiwan. US & Australia are partnering with these countries to contain china.

India has thrown the punch for the first time to give a black eye to China who has been showing its muscles for quite some time. China is still living in the past when Nehru let India down in 1962 as he wanted the Indian army to be employed for agricultural purpose and defence preparedness was his last priority. Thanks to our Chinese friends who woke us from our slumber and making Indian army as one of the finest armies of the world. If Vietnam army could teach a few lessons to the red army, India can do better being ten times better than the former.

Pakistani “facts”, no thank you lol!, All Indians thank Jinnah for providing the greatest service to India by separating Pakistan. He was a true visionary. he envisioned that the only way India could progress was by building a huge fence around the territory of what is now Pakistan. True son of the soil.

Wait till the day oil is discovered on an island chain claimed by Japan, S. Korea or Vietnam. China will start crying wolf and demanding the islands returned to them. Or even better oil discovered in Taiwan (the real China)

There is something bigger at play here. China will be stupid to create these problems on the outside when it is already dealing with difficult political situation on the inside. I don’t know about this issue in specific, but for its skirmishes with the rest of the countries, from what I have read, it has more to do with nationalist sentiment of general public in China than the intention of govt as such.
