MULTAN:

Second year students of the BS education programme at the Bahauddin Zakariya University boycotted their mid-term examination on Monday to protest against the administration for allegedly losing a student’s mathematics examination.

The protesting students raised slogans against the negligence of the university administration for its negligence and for “concealing the truth”.

They boycotted the social sciences examination on Monday and also did not let other students sit the exam.

Some of them locked the doors of the examination hall and later gathered outside the building of the Bahauddin Zakariya University’s Education Department.

They said an Education Department student, Malik Pervaiz, who was declared failed in the third semester examinations two months ago had demanded his examination be rechecked. They said the administration delayed the rechecking “on purpose” without giving him any justification.

Pervaiz told The Express Tribune he was told that his score had remained unchanged in the rechecking.

He said he was not satisfied and obtained an order from the High Court on Friday directing the university administration to recheck his answer sheet. He said after receiving the court order, Bahauddin Zakariya University Education Department Chairman Dr Farooq Ahmed told him that his answer sheet was missing.

On Monday, Pervaiz and his fellow students protested against the university accusing the administration of losing all answer sheets. They demanded that they be shown their answer sheets.

Dr Ahmed said students’ rechecking was not allowed without a reason.

He said Pervaiz’s case was an exception since he had failed the examination and had obtained a court order. He said he had scored 47 out of 100 marks.

The result was confirmed when the answer sheet was rechecked before it went missing. He said even if he had passing marks in the subject, he could not join the fourth semester having failed in English and sociology.

He, however, said that the university administration had agreed to allow Pervaiz to take the third semester mathematics examination again.

He alleged that the Peoples Students Federation (PSF), the student wing of the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), had supported the protest. He said the administration will initiate an inquiry into how the answer sheet had gone missing. Action would be taken against those involved, he said.

Separately, some boarders in the Agriculture Department protested against the increase in hostel fees.

They said the university could not raise the hostel dues while the facilities remained the same. They said more boarders would join their protest on Tuesday (today).

Bahauddin Zakariya University Public Relations Officer Ijaz Bashir said that the hostel dues were raised by the Education Department. He said the budget committee took all the decisions relating to the fees and funds and the university had nothing to do with it.
