As if the ravages of the floods, the incompetence of the government, and the shenanigans surrounding cricket were not bad enough, there is an additional cause of national depression: a group — ‘Kondemn the whole Kommunity Klan’, or the KKK — is actively pushing the narrative that Pakistan is a failed state because this nation, culturally, does not have the attributes of a successful civilisation.
The madness in Sialkot seems to have triggered their wholesale laceration of Pakistanis. This incident has been mounted on the billboards of ridicule as the final verdict on this all those who live here. According to one member of the KKK, our entire history is so designed as to only produce violence and bloodbath. In other words, we as a people, are historically, culturally, and politically wish death and destruction upon ourselves and on others.
Other members of the KKK are busy in drawing rooms spreading the argument that Pakistan’s experiment in attaining the level of a civilisation has failed. As exemplified by the horror of the beating-to-death of two brothers, those who live in this land have become permanently unhinged.
The cause of their anguish is understandable — the horrendous sight of humans being bludgeoned to pulp can wreck any soul and make people shout from the roof-tops in anger and hurt. But their conclusion is downright racist and alarmingly malignant — that this incident is further proof of a barbaric nature of the whole nation.
While our grasp of world history may be faulty but we have poured over enough paper to know that the Indus civilisation does not have a monopoly over lynch mobs, witch-hunters, and stake-burners. Nor does the subcontinent species have beastliness built into its bones. The entire European history, as indeed British and American history is soaked in blood, sometimes shed in the name of religion, sometimes in name of carrying the white man’s burden, but mostly in brutal self-interest.
All colonialists were master killers. The British took the cake in managing meticulous elimination in the lands they occupied for gold, slaves and the glory of the crown. Today’s civilisational success — on whose merit according to the KKK, we don’t measure up — is built on yesterday’s systematic murder of weak natives.
These attitudes, though regulated and controlled, are still prevalent — as much in white, western societies are they are observed in the coloured eastern countries. Beneath the angelic calm of material achievement of these societies — which is enviable and laudable — lurks a blood-thirsty beast that demands annihilation every now and then. The US-led, British-backed war in Iraq is a manifestation of this beast. Need we recall how the Iraqis were, and are being killed? What transpired in those awful prison cells that were guarded by the progeny of successful civilisations? Need we talk about extermination in Afghanistan and the daily dance of death that goes by the name of collateral damage? Should we cite — again — the nuclear attack on Japan?
The KKK’s argument that Pakistanis are collectively responsible for the brutality of a few individuals is Hitlerian in accusation. It is absurd to say that since Pakistani film-goers used to lionise Sultan Rahi that means that they love violence. This is no more evidence of national penchant for violence than the Hollywood’s glorification of James Bond’s hi-tech mayhem and murder. And if we must take fictional characters as reflections of deeply-ingrained social attitudes, then Hollywood’s cannibals, flesh-eaters, vampires, mobsters, gangsters, rapists, torturers, and yes, ‘Terminators’ and paedophiles, have to be seen as mirror images of the inner self of the West.
In the same vein the English doctor Harold Shipman known as ‘Dr Death’ who killed 215 of his patients over a 23-year period can be seen as the way of the English. Or the burning of the Christians and pogroms of the Muslims should be seen as the collective intent of the Indian society. The point is that no society is collectively condemnable. No one nation can be held responsible for the sins of a few individuals. Millions of great men and women are at work serving their fellow human beings in this country. They should not be slighted and insulted by stereotyping them as failed human beings. The KKK should have a heart.
Or get another passport.

The Love it or Leave it Logic would make it all the more difficult to strive for improvement. It is very easy to blame the west for all misdoings. West didn’t make us stick to Feudalism. They didn’t make our education policy. They did not embezzle Billions while the poor masses starved. We have to realize that we are going only one way…. DOWN. When we blame others remember there are four fingers pointing back at you.
Pakistanis put Pakistan at the very last…. Don’t believe me!! Ask the Good General who said “Pakistan First” and gave us an NRO.
Everyone has to realize that this is our country and we are responsible to bring Good fortune or otherwise to it. And if the west manipulates us to act otherwise, then it is our fault that we let them make us …..Recommend
I would like to say that there is always 2 sides to a coin…. and what Talat has mentioned is right and this article was only regarding the fact ” to get another passport”.. with all due respect most of us here are still doing the same thing “pointing fingers” rather then making a constructive argument or a constructive thought… we all know what Talat has said is so true and when I say that is coz every nation has their good and bad sides with it but that doesnt mean that we start claiming that we dont know how to live and that we are a failed state…
leme ask you if a family member of all of us is wrong in some way.. would we all dis-own him/her …. no we would not do that we would all do our best to improve them… then how can we say that about our own country..there r so many reason that i can point out as to y we ignore it when it comes to country .. but not when it comes to our own families.. but i would rather say something positive.. as most of us here are rational people and they know the reasons..
so its imp to get ride of the problems rather then just saything that this house is not clean we cannot live in it.. ALLAH has given us this homeland we need to be thankful and need to make it better and better rather then saying that this is not clean and there r so many problems we need to leave it and go somewhere else where everything is perfect.. remember all developed nations were not developed since they came into being.. who made them like wat they r now is the ppl.. and also because they wanted to make their country better and they then not only wanted it THEY DID IT…. we all know we want to make it better but only this THOUGHT is not going to help this cause we need TO DO IT… and this is the perfect time to do it… as there are so many good ppl and i would love to name some of them out, coz everyone who does something good needs to be appreciated and encouraged, like (Shahzad Roy, Jawad Ahmed, Imran Khan, Eddhi and the list goes on) as they r the most courageous ppl in our nation who in this time … where everyone else wants to sit on their sofa and gossip about the politics and the nation while having the best tea and best food.. but not do anything about it…. these are the ppl who named above r doing it and r trend setters … we need to follow them and set the same examples for the generations to come so that we can make Pakistan one of the better nations..
we know y our enemies are after us… coz they know our potential.. its time we realise our POTENTIAL too… plz open ur eyes and come out do something usefull.. ENOUGH OF TALKING PLZZZZ
ITS TIME TO DO SOME WORK.. AND EARN SOME RESPECT…
ALLAH BLESS PAKISTAN AND ALL THE PAKISTANIS… WE ALL LOVE EACHOTHER.. PAKISTAN ZINDABAD..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Recommend
Talat, I agree with the absurdity of condemning and labeling a whole nation but don’t agree that it means they should have to leave the country, what happened to the democratic right of dissent and healthy debate.Recommend
The point is quite simple. good and bad exists in every society, but you do not tag the entire nation as bad/failed. Good do exist in our society but right now they are silent, not because they are passive but because we lack the proper law and order. For those who want recent incidents, a muslim woman stabbed several times in court, what about all the prisoner of war and testimonials of US army filtering thru now. There are many other such incidents happening in the most developed of nations. The man will create “fitna” as angels had showed their concerns, but as God put it “there are good men in the ranks too” as well.
I guess our self esteem has gone so down that who ever insults us we deserve it. Thanks Talat for still having self esteem and self belief and showing us we should have it too.Recommend
I completely agree with Robin.. Talat’s words do not match his attitude with which he conducts the shows. He hardly has something positive to convey!
@ Mohsin is it on sept 4 or 14? I will attend insha’Allah.Recommend

Fasi Zaka is right. Most of us have seen the overturned cap of gutter. A large multitude of scared cockroaches scurrying here and there depicts all the above comments. Every issue becomes a “Them vs Us” issue.kkk will bash the right winger and vice versa. could we have a serious discussion on the contents of the two columns without finger pointing. Let me help you my fellow cockroaches: Q1) Are we cock roaches or not? Give 5 reasons Q2) Should we get another passport or not? give 5 reasons. Seem academic? exactly. We were taught to think like humans but as we are cockroaches we were not able to do that. try if you can, Good Luck.Recommend

An interesting article but I would not agree that Pakistan is a failed state. If only we could get rid of the Taliban everything will get back to normal.Recommend
Violence and we are known to be aggressive on each other as well as others. If only there could be more tolerance and secular ideas in this country, we could safe our future.Recommend
Well…I know the sentiment that led Fasi Zaka to write a strong article BUT also agree with the sentiment in the backlash that it generated.
Fulton’s article used a bit too much generalization but the intent was totally agreeable.
Though the… “positive” (if i can use that word in the same sentence with sialkot) thing that should come out of the Sialkot incident is that we Pakis should become introspective, agree that WE are ourselves are the problem…and begin the change from within, person-by-person, community by community.
This debate really is useless because its people who think well of Pakistan using their forms of expression to defend and move forward. I know Mehreen Khan agrees we need to change from within, so does Fulton, Fasi Zaka and Talat Hussain. Its just they dont agree with the particular expression used to exhibit this angst.
So lets just agree that we are now aware and understand the Ayah of the Quran about the Nations and the state they are in:
“Verily! Allah will not change the (good) condition of a people as long as they do not change their state (of goodness) themselves. But when Allah wills a people’s punishment, there can be no turning it back, and they will find besides Him no protector”(Surat Ra’d, Ayah 11)Recommend
The solution is GET ANOTHER ATTITUDE not PASSPORT.Recommend
Hard to believe Talat does not have another passport!Recommend
Wrong is wrong regardless of the time and society we live in. The day we accept wrong as norm and stop questioning it, we start stepping backwards in civilization.
Talat Sahab, you need a reality check of what we have become! acknowledging our mistakes and undoing is the only key to get out of this mess and trust me it does not make anyone less patriotic!
Its no longer about “few individuals” – its about all of us Pakistanis and what we have become.
“Millions of great men and women are at work serving their fellow human beings in this country”
Yes indeed, it’s only the disasters that bring us together and then we get busy within our own selfish world.
Unfortunately, we have so well immunised ourselves from the wrong, that it no longer affects us the way it should. Our hearts have hardened and we have become baihis.
Perhaps you need to “get another passport” and live with people who still have basic values, who would cry for a dog, who would donate without discrimination! It may give you a broader perspective.

Pakistanis just can’t take criticism and condemnation, its hurts their pride and dignity. Look around you, Pakistanis are dying iin terrrorist attacks, floods, earthquakes, mobs and are suffering from incompetent govt and institutions and massive corruption. What is there to praise in Pakistan ? It is a hellhole and only when you admit it is a hellhole will you begin your journey on the right path.Recommend
Talat, your criticism of George and Fasi are unwarranted and distasteful. They may be expressing their hurt and frustration in a manner that annoys you but they are representing the feelings of many many Pakistanis. It’s outrageous to suggest that because you don’t agree with them, they should get another passport. Listen to what they have to say. They love this country as much as you do. They want it to recognise ourselves and change; not hide or ignore the serious problems facing our society.Recommend
While i have been watching TS since his PTV days and really admire his analysis expertise he has got it wrong this time. His examples of the killer doctor and Sultan rahi are over-simplifications in a sense that while bad things do happen in WEST, the society there collectively not only condemns it but also tries with HONESTY to counter it. No one tries to “justify” killings in WEST by if and buts like PAK society does for the TALIBAN issue. Our apologetic excuses and refusal to call TALIBAN terrorists (not the newspaper headlines) is one such big proof. Our nation not only has failed miserably to define which type of ISLAM or SHARIAH the nations wants but also failed to give a SENSIBLE SHAPE to the dreams of IQBAL and JINNAH. Therefore TALAT needs to better bring some strong arguments here, these are very ordinary ones. His writing more seems a “tit for tat” on paper than any real substance this time.Recommend
Dear Talat Hussain, its not the WESTERN society where KILLING an innocent is a COMPLEX case, as to if the killing was GOOD or BAD , ISLAMI or GAIR-ISLAMI, SHAHADAT or HALAKAT et. All such nonsense issues have been part of the MUSLIM world not the WEST, exceptions apart.
It is not the WESTERN society where few are running after 72 virgins and rest killing those and getting their own group of 72. Such confusions and complexities are part of MUSLIM world not the WEST.
In WEST everyone knows how to treat someone’s death. The WESTERN world doesnt make an issue out of the death. Similarly if a christian person turns a SUICIDE bomber 99.99% of the WESTERN world will immediately condemn it and might make its own gov answerable.
Can the MUSLIM ummah from Egypt to Malaysia and from Africa to Abroad-settlers come even closest to the standards of a WESTERN society?
Obviously NO, so how come you are over-simplying sultan rahi and the doctor killer to generalize the WEST? While you can easily name 100 suicide bombers and their “appreciation” in MUSLIM world, can you barely name just few of the other KILLER DOCTOR incidents or something similar ? The WESTERN world is not GENERALIZING because they are not labeling MUSLIMs as terrorist only considering one or two incident. There are thousand and thousand of terrorist incidents in which MUSLIM ummah is involed and not only involved but justifies it by calling it JIHAD or WAR against INFIDELs or LIBERATION etc.
List 1000 terror incidents in last 10 years and you will find 990 have fingerprints going to either Arab world or PAKISTAN. This is a POWERFUL figure to call the MUSLIM world, equal responsible for the terrorism. West has no such figures. While individual terror incidents do occur, the society NOT only condemns it but the laws there make sure the responsible get punished.
A wrong post indeed by you.Recommend
blowing up people into pieces is this nation’s favorite pasttime and exporting terror is the only export oriented industry…am i missing something here?Recommend
@Tilsim Spot on!
The “No problem” and “Aall in well” attitude is a response of lazy minds, that lack the courage for to undertake a change in the mindset. Acknowledge the problem, diagnose the root cause, and then try to fix it.
It is a disingenuous journalism to simply shoot the messenger, and to report only what the audience wants to hear. It is a disservice to the country.
Thumbs down!!Recommend
well said Mr. Talat..
although wat happened in Sioalkot may not allow others to label us as uncivilized ppl or barbarians… but it surely brings out one quality in the lime light… that we wont really mind seeing something wrong happening…and wont try to stop it , especially if it puts our life and safety in danger… That is if not 100%, 80% of us are cowards… including me.
And the reason why we as mulsims will ever fails will not be cuz of the tyranny, for thats the trait of the devil and only rare of Humans are so… we will fail cuz of the cowardice… and selfishness to protect ourselves and close our eyes.. to the ill treatments and injustice happening, sometimes even to our ownselves.
So if i give right to my husband to beat me every night and i still stay with him… its not he only who is at wrong… i being a mature sensible human being and above it a muslim , beleiver of allah the almighty, its me who is wrong to suffer and not get up and strengthen myself in the faith of Allah and claim for myself my rights of security and respect.
i being a shia will quote u of what the martordom of kerbela was abt… Imam husain sacrificed his life being a muslim.. fighting for islam… yazid called himself a mulsim too(in the books of world, no one can deny he wasnt, any less of a mulsim then u and me are)… and all thsoe who were under him were muslims… they were not jews christians or illuminatis… they were muslims…but all of them were cowards and as so… they were just as wrong as yazid himself… and if husain… wud have wanted he wud have been selfish too and let Yazid do what he wanted and let god save islam. Himself…why bother.. but he wasnt a coward and he wasnt a selfish person… but he was only a muslim…
All those who fought against Husain, werent all enemies of islam…there were some who didnt wnated what happened there, there were some who were just doing their job and may be hating it.. but Allah will condemn every one of them along with Yazid… they all died a painful death cuz they kept their mouth shut…some only for offering a nail for the saddle of the men who rode the horse and went in the battle.
we need to know…that whatever we are facing today… doesnt make u and me a victim… we have chosen to be a victim by being a coward.
and what i am suggesting is not something of a weak-hearted person like me to do…but atleast i can regularly seek and pray to allah for courage and a stronger faith…
Thank youRecommend
Excellent read!
For many of us who in anguish and deepsorrow over the sialkot inncient started labelling the whole nation as a failled civilization and reduced them to mere cockroaches, this article does restore some of the dignity! failed ppl do not have any hope.. we are full of mistakes but we need to learn from them, take some corrective measures. but we arent hopeless! We have been shown mirror : a very brutal and a dark side indeed but we will not sit back hopelessly! We need to stand up and fix the mess we created! Atleast we realize unlike many western countries who in name of peace have been killing thousands n thousand of innocent ppl. This Is our positive side:)

We are in this state not because of our culture or history, but because we forgot them bothRecommend
The cockroaches in Sialkot are the creation of a deeply dysfunctional state, so are the Taliban (Pakistani, Punjabi, Afghani). If a group of people acknowledge that and say it out loud they are doing no disservice to the Nation, on the other hand Apologists like Talat Hussain and his right wing circus buddies see the good side and the moral high horse these animals sit on. No one is saying that every Pakistani is sick in the head. There are the Edhi’s too, there are kids and old gentlemen in Karachi who go and clean up other peoples litter on the streets. So “Ghalat” be constructive and dont peddle your stinking wares to a population that is not your regular TV audience.Recommend
Well I think I can be a liberal and still agree with Talat on this one. The issue here isn’t even about blaming others for our problems, it’s about refraining from unintellectual sweeping statements. Why can’t so called liberals understand that?Recommend
Its Talat sahib who sits on a tv chanell and daily paints a doomsday scenario. sami’s article was the best ever i have read. Talat sahib wants that PPP should go rest of the pakistan is ok.Recommend
Fusi Zaka and Mr George have courage to identify multifarious problems the country is facing since decades. I dont agree that Pakistan is a failed State nevertheless, the country is not problem free.
If we want to get rid of the situation, we must first of all, diagnose the diseases of body politic of our country, hiding them will bring no cure. Mr Talat had pointed out aggressions and atrocities committed by the USA and western world, is it rational to justify what is going on in our country. Hardly any day passes when there is no terrorist attack. It is absurd to compare past crualties of western world. We should focus present day situation of ours which is not at all pleasant. Culture of denial will not help to overcome our odds.It is not West or USA conducting blasts in mosques, Imambargahs, shopping malls and other places, where in the opinion of the perpetrators death toll could be high. The terrorists are from within, a fact which the west winger had been trying to deny.
The minorities, especially Ahmadiyya community, since many decades, have been continuously persecuted, can someone deny it? Ninety plus worshipers were killed in Lahore, and next day through firey
speeches they were declared liable to be killed. In present day West, people of different faiith and races are living in peace and harmony and in Pakistan, those who travel in bullet proof vehicles do not feel themselves safe.Recommend
its really encouraging to see that at least someone in Pakistan is raising his voice against the propaganda being instigated against us. This is what we should do…all of us….only criticising wont do…state your opinions…logically………you would realise that there is not much of a logic in all this propaganda after all….its just that we often fail to see the obvious.Recommend
I think he is one of the KKK. He wants a war that no one can fight in the country. Pakistan wants a leader who can save it from the punishment of the world. The whole world abhors our manner of governance. I see Talat as Don Quixote. But he writes good English. Let him carry on writing to prove he is a superb writer. On T.V. he speaks well. It simply doesn’t mean he should lead the world.Recommend

Quite respectfully Sir, two wrongs don’t make a right. Just because Stalin’s Russia and Hitler’s Germany killed millions of their own citizens in cold blood, we should not consider our selves to be vindicated of our crimes in Bangladesh. So what should people do when there is no ray of hope and problems are increasing day by day. We dont find any single political or religious party to join which is sincere to tackle this situation. The literate people of this country need to move from thinking in ideologues and meta narratives about good and evil, to making mature logical evaluations of the issues at hand. Dabbing the nation with a broad brush of failure was a surprisingly shortsighted move, on the part of a man who we all once thought was a genius in his trade. Self-respect, not self-deprecation, is the first step in moving forward. What we witnessed was an excercise in anthropology with its sweeping cultural generalizations from a sample of less than 2 – a construct of the colonial mindset for the lesser nations of the world Our literati need to move past that self-deprecating attitude that our colonial masters instilled in us, and stand up for themselves and their nation.
Kudos to Talat Hussain for a rebuttal well-crafted.Recommend
hahahhaah it is ridiculous that you even compare your self with civilised world, people there have everything that you can only wish for … police in most countries will arrest you on assault charges for even hitting someone once.. leave alone battering someone to death in their presence.
People tend to blame all the ills on government and politicians but I don’t think that is true. I, an ordinary citizen, like most of you are to blame like anyone else.
I surely have broken the law and gotten away with it and I am sure most of you have done so, you want to admit or not is another question.
I have lived in this country for long enough and amongst the most richest and educated of you and I have say that there is very little difference these people with ‘haves’ make in comparison to ‘have nots’.
Amongst are numerous ills is lack of tendency of proper critical self evaluation !!!!Recommend
Sir, your patriotism must be saluted, however unless we don’t criticize ourselves as a nation/country/ people, and analyse our positive and negative attributes we won’t be able to understand where and how this country went wrong. The mass populace has been cheated badly by its leaders for decades; we have a bubbling mass of humanity, with no education or skills which can sink us faster than a raging flood. For this we have no one to blame but ourselves; corrupt leadership has eaten the basic rights of its poorest citizens. We have failed them and created failed human beings with not much to live for except abject poverty.
I do agree when you say that even the most civilized societies can beget blood-thirsty beasts who prey upon the weak! Well, that is human nature! How do the weak strengthen themselves and drive the beast out! Lets look towards soloutions, and getting rid of the beast, rather than ranting against each other! I’m sure we are capable of positive thinking rather than this incredibly simplistic blame game.Recommend
thumbs up!
Have been wanting to hear this for such a long time now.
I completely agree to what you have written. It feels like as if we as a nation have jumped into this ditch of self loath and depression and there is an organized effort by an entire group of so called intellectuals who are fueling the file, reminding us constantly that we are worst than anyone alive in the world and we truly deserve to die.
I suggest any one saying Pakistan is a failed country or that we are hopeless creatures who do not deserve to live as a nation should get another passport and quit this place. We are already overly populated and cannot take the burden of guilt adding hate inciting individuals.Recommend
“Get another passport” is a childish argument at best, and boorish at worst. It’s like like if you see something sticking to my face and point it out, I, instead of wiping my face, turn around and tell you: Go, get yourself a decent haircut.
