Italy's ENI discovers major gas field near Karachi

ROME: Italian energy major ENI said on Wednesday it had discovered a major reserve of between 300 billion and 400 billion cubic feet of gas some 350 kilometres north of Karachi.
The discovery was made in the Khirtar Fold Belt region close to the ENI-operated Bhit gas processing facility, the company said in a statement.
ENI said it “confirms the presence of significant exploration potential that can be exploited through the application of new geological models.”
The company said it had begun talks with Pakistani authorities on creating a joint venture, adding that it would “help to reduce the national gas deficit.”
ENI has been in Pakistan since 2000 and is the country’s largest producer, with average production of 54,800 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2011.

Shouldn’t we Pakistanis boycott this European company since Europe is also involved in publishing cartoons of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Shouldn’t we tell them that we don’t need gas discovered by you. We will only take gas from our local companies like OGDC, PPL and POL. Lets boycott this company and its gas!

It only proves that science and technology can help every country. We have to benefit from all the knowledge and expertise available in today’s world. Pakistan is in the region which is rich in oil and gas and there is only need for exploration and investment. WMD and bombs cannot help create jobs and produce power. Investment in education and exploration could uplift the entire population irrespective of who is ruling the country. True economic progress always outpaces and overtakes the usual problems of corruption (as happened in China and India) and mismanagement. Let us open the country for new investment and trade.

small discovery.. qadirpur gas reserve is 4 TCF.. and sui had 12 TCF.. each producing around 500 mmscf per day.. this gas field give us around 50 to 80 mmscf.. our total requirement per day is 4.5 bcf… and we producing 3.8 bcf… that discovery take us to 3.9 bcf..

6.5 billion cubic feet per day is 2012 daily requirement of gas in Pakistan.So this discovery of gas is worth about 50 day gas demand of Pakistan

@Suffan: Just to correct your facts, Bhit Gas field is designed at 320MMSCFD & is currently operating in excess of 340MMSCFD. This meets around 60% requirement of Karachi. Considering the depleting reservoirs it is indeed a major discovery for Pakistan.

Heartening to see hydrocarbon discoveries happening in what is sometimes considered a mature play. It would be interesting to know whether the work leading up to the discovery was carried out by ENI’s offices in Pakistan or by their regional/global teams. That will be an indication of the skill levels offered by Explorationists within the country – a direct signal to other Oil & Gas operators interested in investing.
