The way women dress

Published: September 19, 2012

MELBOURNE: This is with reference to Tazeen Javed’s article “A woman’s clothing is her own business” (September 18). Many people in the country seem to think that women in Pakistan have never been coerced into dressing in a particular way. This is a fallacy. There were many instances during the Ziaul Haq regime when women were forced to wear chaddars against their wishes. I remember being forced into wearing one when going to college, otherwise we would not be allowed to enter the college premises.

and we men had to discard our Armani suits and wear shalwar-chamise or else as the enlightened general said he would “hang [you] upside down”.

No joke here; I was standing there when he spoke these wise and wonderful words.
