LAHORE:

The Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) will arrange a walk on Tuesday (today) to protest the production and release of the movie, Innocence of Muslims Dr Ehsan Sharif, the PUASA acting president, announced on Monday.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Sharif said the general body meeting will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday. He said a resolution condemning the film will be passed in the meeting.

He said the association hoped the government will immediately address the issue to avoid any further hurting of sentiments of Muslims. He said the association would appeal the government to take the matter to the United Nations to stop the spread of hatred against Muslims. He said it was essential that the government take steps to stop the dissemination of blasphemous material in the country.

He said the movie had hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community, not just in Pakistan, but across the world. He said it was natural that with the increasing frequency of hate campaigns, Muslims were losing their patience.

Tuesday’s meeting will be followed by a protest walk by PUASA members. The walk will begin from the undergraduate block and end at the campus bridge. PU Vice Chancellor Dr Mujhaid Kamran will also join the walk.

Sharif said the members also plan to request the government to hold an inquiry into the fire at a factory in Karachi which had left hundreds of workers dead.
