KARACHI:

Most of the schools and universities have decided to hold classes on Thursday (today) despite the strike called by the nationalists, which later turned into a day of mourning.

“It does not seem right to keep academic institutions closed when transporters and traders have shown an indifference to the strike,” said the Private Schools Management Association’s chairperson, Sharafuz Zaman.

For Syed Khalid Shah, the All Private Schools Management Association chairperson, rain was more of an issue than the strike. “The rains during the last week have already affected the routine life. The schools which are unaffected by rains will open today,” he said. The institutes for higher education, including Karachi University, NED University of Engineering and Technology, Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology and Dow University of Health Sciences, will also resume classes.

Around 55 campuses of The Educators in Karachi will hold classes but 12 campuses outside of Karachi will be closed. Some independent private institutions, including The City School, Foundation Public School, CAS School and Beaconhouse, will open while Karachi Grammar School and Bay View Academy will remain closed due to “security concerns”.

“In case there is a security alert, we inform parents and students through text messages even past midnight,” said Muniza Waseem, headmistress at the Gulshan-e-Iqbal branch of the City School. The Lyceum School decided to stay closed, according to an email from co-principal Shereen Saeed Khan.
