Woman lops off man’s nose for harassing her

Published: August 28, 2010

Shehnaz said she wanted Ahmed to feel the shame he caused her family

SARGODHA: A 20-year-old girl chopped off the nose of a father of four on Friday allegedly because he was harassing her.

According to Kot Momin police officials, Behak Dayam village resident Bashir Ahmed allegedly used to harass his neighbour Wali Muhammad’s daughter Shahnaz Bibi over the phone. “He would threaten me and say that he could easily ruin my life by spreading rumours about me,” Shahnaz said. She said that her family had begun receiving prank calls about her and that random strangers had begun harassing her by mentioning Ahmed.

Shehnaz said that her family believed the rumours to be true. “My parents and brothers believed his claims about having relations with me and I was severely beaten,” she said. Shehnaz said that her family began to punish her on a regular basis for the shame they were suffering at the hands of the local community. “My father constantly said ‘tum ne humaari naak katvaa di he’ (you have dishonoured us) and I began to fear for my life,” she told the police.

Shehnaz Bibi said that her brother, Mohammad Azeem, had attacked Bashir Ahmed. “When Azeem came home one evening he blamed me. Somehow Ahmed had planted doubts in his mind regarding my character,” she said. Shehnaz said that despite her family’s reactions, Ahmed continued to call and blackmail her. “He told me that if I didn’t agree to having relations with him things would only get worse,” she said, adding that she decided to take matters into her own hands.

On Monday, Shehnaz told Ahmed to meet her near the fields by their village. According to her he agreed to the proposition five days later. “I knew that my family would not be at home at the time and I went to meet him in the fields,” she said. Shehnaz then chopped off Ahmed’s nose with a sharp knife and ran back home. Locals gathered to the site after Ahmed started screaming and took him to the nearby DHQ hospital. Doctors at the DHQ hospital immediately transferred Ahmed to Mayo Hospital in Lahore where he is currently receiving treatment.

Ahmed registered a case with the Laksian police against four people including Shahnaz and her brother Muhammad Azeem. The police raided Wali Muhammad’s house and took Azeem and Shehnaz into custody.

When questioned, Shehnaz said that she did not regret her actions. “He had been harassing me for months without shame. He is married, is the father of four children and still he would not leave me alone,” she said. “Everyone began to tease and harass my family saying that we had lost our honour even though he was the one without honour,” she added. “I made sure that he would not be fit to show his face in public again. Mere baap ne kaha mein ne sab ki naak katva di to mein ne bhi us ski naak kat di,” she said. Ahmed, while still in the hospital, said that he had already had illicit relations with Shehnaz.

“She was jealous of my wife and family. She blamed me for the fact that people were harassing her,” he said.

She definitely took some drastic measures, but i support her decision 100%. If this sort of stuff happens to women everyday, i see no reason why women should not be allowed to retaliate or treat men in a similar way, given just cause.Recommend

the police have been prompt on taking Shahnaz and her brother in custody. Never heard of any male arrests when a female goes through the same ordeal. Why is that and why is it that the girl was not provided alternate protection and she had to take the matters in her own hands.Recommend

If people (read especially women) got justice this sort of thing would not happen. We are becoming a very violent society and women are being pushed to the very limits of their patience. However, I have to admit I admire Shehnaz’s courage.Recommend

This is sickening. A week ago, we were all condemning the violence in Sialkot pledging to curb brutality from our society. This week we are all cheering a woman for chopping off the nose of some guy. While I agree that she suffered a lot at the hands of this guy and her own family, I still believe this violence was un-called for. Until we stop condoning this kind of behavior; such things will keep on happening, will lead to more copy-cat actions, and others will try to outdo this by raising the bar of brutality to unprecedented levels.Recommend

Usman, there’s a difference of scenario.. what kind of justice she would get if she reported this matter to police or court? Aren’t you aware of the circumstannces which an average woman has to brave?Recommend

@Dia there is absolutely no difference. What if the Sialkot brothers had actually killed the man’s wife? What justice would he have gotten in the courts? Admittedly they are not exactly the same incidents but cheering for this woman and condemning the Sialkot incident just underlines the kind of hypocrisy that has ruined this country.Recommend

If the state is not able to provide justice, well in time, this will happen again and agian. Why all the so called HEADS of Islamic sectors in Pakistan join hands and sit togather to give a unanimous code of islam conduct and the punishments in the light of QURAN and HADITH.Is it not possible? why such news are rare in S.Arabia? we have somehow to manage it.Otherwise nature will follow its own way to mend us. Real islamic spirit agrees with the so called Capitalism of the first world and its branches like democracy—-we have in pakistan or the system of justice we are following in Pakistan.????????? worried and lerned people are encoured to give comments,THANKS TO MALIK IBRAHIMM SAHIB FOR HIS EFFORTS.Recommend

@ OA, killing a woman and harrassing a woman is the same scenario according to you? Well it isnt. There’s a legal punishment for a killer but we here in Pakistan there’s no legal punishment for a man who harrasses a woman without having harmed her physicially. She might have filed a case ONLY if she’d had a strong background which she’s lacking! And above all, she didnt kill or torture the man. Just a small chop :).. oh that’s well deserved!Recommend
