LAHORE: Malik Ishaq, co-founder of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), was released from Kot Lakhpat jail on Tuesday after an additional district and sessions judge granted him bail a day ago, his lawyer said.

Ishaq was earlier arrested from Lahore airport for making a “provocative” speech earlier this month.

He has been implicated in dozens of cases – mostly murder – and was accused of masterminding a 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, which wounded seven players and an assistant coach and killed eight Pakistanis.

“The court has accepted his bail application and later he was freed from jail,” Arif Mehmood Rana, his lawyer told AFP.

Ijaz Shafi Dogar, a senior police officer confirmed to AFP that he was being freed as he was not wanted in any other case.

“He was set free this evening from Kot Lakhpat jail,” Dogar said.

Ishaq was detained over a speech he made at a religious school on August 19 in the wake of a rise in sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia Muslims.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi is regarded as the most extreme Sunni terror group in Pakistan and is accused of killing hundreds of Shias after its emergence in the early 1990s.

    Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah!
    Our judiciary supports terrorism from lower courts all the way up to the supreme court.

    Obviously there is no abnormal thing in the process or the person for SC to take notice. Just a routine killer because of hate and wild animal instincts…. who cares!!

    @Praful Shah:

    Your country has no toilets. You live in a land where religious hatred goes hand-in-hand with a primitive caste system. You have the world’s largest share of impoverished masses. Believe me, when it comes to failed states, you Hindustanis don’t have too far to look.

    On the anniversary of Quaid-e-Azam’s death, we see a mindless butcher released back into society. This is the kind of man who would have insulted and sworn at the Quaid, and hated his commitment to tolerance and equality. Now he is free and Pakistan’s minorities are in the prison of fear. Mr Jinnah, we were never worthy of your efforts; may Allah SWT bless your soul for every breath you took to give us the gift of Pakistan.

    The charade was kind of obvious. Once he was taken in, he’d be released again.
