If, only if…
ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Kamran Shafi’s article “If, only if …” (September 9). I wonder why the writer is so full of hate for the army and attributes everything wrong in the country to this institution. Doesn’t he find anything wrong with the way this country is being ruled these days? Extremism breeds in an environment of anarchy, disillusionment, poverty, illiteracy, general discontent and lack of governance, for which the political leadership is equally responsible. It is time that the political leadership starts to take ownership of whatever is happening. It must gain complete control over the ‘deep state’ but for that it has to stand tall on moral grounds, which seems to be an impossible proposition.

There can be no moral high ground, for the moment the state trys to take on the military, people like you come to peddle blind support for the Army. Take the example of Kayani not allowing ex-Generals face civil prosecution. Where is the mass backing for the state to prosecute criminals?

Who is stopping the civilian set up to follow Turkish example where the Army hass been successfully tamed after decades of veto power on parliament.
Recommend
civilian control of military is only possible when civilian government performs well on economic front.as did the Turkish civil leadership.

Lets put one corrupt Grade 22 secretary in jail and no one can stop the civilian leadership from prosecuting a dozen generals. I am a die hard pro democracy / anti military rule person but still find it hard to defend the parliament. The same Parliament which did not dare implement agricultural tax, levy GST, plug tax evasion, take on mighty sugar / cement cartels, amend blasphemy law etc but stood up to Supreme court and even sacrificed its PM only for saving looted wealth. And imagine taking credit for this act of defiance.
Higher principles cannot be followed in vacuum unfortunately.
