ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has submitted an adjournment motion in the Senate Secretariat, seeking debate on the impact of the devastating floods on the country’s economy.

Former Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, who belongs to the PML-N, moved the motion in the upper house of parliament.

In the motion, the main opposition party expressed its concern over the performance of the national economy. The motion is based on a report published in The Express Tribune earlier this week.

The report quoted an official correspondent predicting 0 per cent or no real growth in the gross domestic product during the current fiscal year of 2010-11. While inflation, it added, is feared to rise up to 25 per cent during the fiscal year, owing mainly to unprecedented floods. Senator Ishaq Dar said that the situation was alarming and the country seemed to be heading towards a major economic catastrophe.

“The situation warranted the Senate to undertake a threadbare discussion on the national economy so that a comprehensive strategy could be formulated to pull Pakistan out of a looming economic disaster,” the contents of the motion added.
