WASHINGTON: Bollywood star Aamir Khan features on the cover of Time magazine following his hugely successful TV show Satyamev Jayate.

“He’s breaking the Bollywood mold by tackling India’s social evils. Can one actor change a nation?” says the blurb on the cover, which features a close-up of the actor looking intensely into the camera.

The TV show brought social issues to the fore.

It started with the issue of female foeticide, traversed over various burning social issues informing, educating, sensitising and touching audiences’ hearts and ended its 13-week journey with the spotlight on the right to equality.

Time had earlier featured Aishwarya Rai on its cover.

It is true if such talented persons can direct the potential to erredicate the social evils can change the whole nation. Pakistan also has lot of such talents but has gone on deep sleep. Probably due to fear of unknwon or lack of moral support from society or government.

What if Aamir Khan was a Pakistani? Would have ascended the heights he has?

Would the Pakistanis allowed him to marry a Hindu?

I do not think he would have achieved an iota of what he has achieved in India. He is a very tolerant, liberal Indian, who doesn’t wear his religion on his shoulders. The name of his TV show is a Sanskrit phrase – Satyameva Jayate- which shows appreciation for his roots. He doesn’t claim he is an Arab.

He came out to support the downtrodden, he was appreciated. Would the Pakistanis have allowed him to stop the persecution of the Ahmadis? Would they have tolerated if he had called them Muslim? Would they have let him live if he had stood up for that poor Christian woman, whose defence killed Taseer?

and people say Bollywood is crap….I always maintained its a vehicle of both subtle and visible evolution.and this was the example of the later…anybody who says Satyameva Jayate is not a Bollywood product,i am talking about the lead showman and the production values….Recommend

He is a proud Muslim and I am proud to call him my friend although we hardly ever met. Compare him to self-proclaimed “Badshah” Khan, also a Muslim and perhaps the most over-rated actor in Bollywood. There is no other Indian who has invited so much unwanted attention to India. He spares no chance to make a fool of himself everywhere he goes, in his country or abroad.

Aamir khan should become the next prime minister of India. He or arvind Kejriwal. Both have my vote and my undying faith. Time to kick out the looters and vagabond politicians out of new Delhi.

I wish our Great Khan had done the similar shows. No doubt Imran’s cancer hospital and university are great deeds but challenging evil forces is the real bravery.

    @BruteForce:
To add on to what you say, there are many Hindu – Muslim mixed marriages in India, both Hindu boys marrying Muslim girls and Muslim Boys marrying Hindu girls. Many do not change their religion or name after marriage. These days no girl changes her name after a mixed marriage. Though we are Hindu Brahmins, even 30 years ago two of my 2nd cousins married Muslim girls and are still happily married. One of my cousins father told my cousin that he can marry the Muslim girl only after his death. His father died after 7 – 8 years later and then my cousin married his love. My Bangladeshi business associate has a Christian daughter in law from a Latin American country. His friends mocked him and said that his son has cut off his nose (shamed him). He also told me of a Bangladeshi Muslim family that has Muslim, Christian and Hindu son-in-laws. I think you find sprinkles of mixed marriages in Bangladesh also where change of religion or name is not a requirement. In Pakistan any non-muslim marrying a muslim should convert and also have a name change. All said, I also know individual employers and private companies (not government companies) denying job opportunities to Muslims in India. It could be more of some fear factor than a religious bias. India has come a long way but there is still a distance that has to be covered.

As an Indian brought up in a truly secular country, let me tell my Pakistani friends, (I am not being vain) that when movements that matter much are launched, people support, or take part in them, wholeheartedly and there is absolutely no prejudice against whoever launches them. Ameer Khan’s ‘Sathya Meva Jayathe’ is an example. I wish celebrities in Pakistan, be it from any field, used their fame to guide young minds for good causes!

OR probably anyone who shows Pakistanis a mirror (As Aamir has done to Indians) will be called a traitor/RAW agent/CIA agent. By contrast, Aamir received a tremendous response from both civil society as well as decision makers at all levels of government. No-one was concerned about his religion or called him an agent for raising uncomfortable questions.Recommend

@JSM: “Why is his being a muslim so important. Is it not enough to be patriot and a good man?”

Frankly his religion has no relevance within India. HE is respected because he is a great actor, has produced some very sensitive movies and most recently this show. It is only when it comes to a APakistani board that his faith is brought up. Perhaps to tell Pakistanis that
    – a Muslim man marrying a Hindu woman does not invite fatwas from Hindu clergy
    – his religion and the fact that he is shining a torch on India’s social problems does not brand him as an ISI agent.
