US designates eight Lashkar-e-Taiba leaders as terrorists, places sanctions

WASHINGTON: The US Treasury Department has designated eight leaders of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) as terrorists and placed sanctions on them, holding them accountable for the Mumbai attacks in 2008, and attacks on coalition and Afghan forces in Afghanistan.

According to a press release, the leaders who face sanctions include Sajid Mir, Abdullah Mujahid, Ahmed Yaqub, Hafiz Khalid Walid, Qari Muhammad Yaqoob Sheikh, Amir Hamza, Abdullah Muntazir and Talha Saeed.

Lashkar-e-Taiba has already been designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) in 2001 by the US State Department.

The Treasury Department’s Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David S Cohen said in a statement, “today’s action against LeT is Treasury’s most comprehensive to date against this group and includes individuals participating in all aspects of LeT’s operations – from commanders planning attacks to those managing LeT’s relationships with other terrorist groups.”

“Attacking LeT’s facilitation networks is particularly important, since charitable donations LeT raises in Pakistan – its primary revenue source – are used to fuel LeT’s militant operations,” it added.

The sanctions by the Treasury Department bars “US persons from engaging in any transactions with these individuals and freezes any assets the designees have under US jurisdiction”.

The statement said that despite being banned by the Pakistani government in 2002, LeT continues to operate in Pakistan and throughout the region, and is allegedly engaged in or supports terrorist activities around the world.

The press release said, “LeT has conducted numerous terrorist acts against Pakistani, Indian, Afghan, and US interests and is responsible for the November 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed more than 160 people, including six Americans, and the July 2006 Mumbai train bombings that killed more than 180 people.”

Amongst the leaders designated, Sajid Mir is one of the senior members of LeT. He has been accused of training and providing guidance to the operatives involved in the 26/11 attacks. “Mir also directed the pre-operation target surveillance conducted by LeT operative David Coleman Headley for the attacks,” said the Treasury Department. “In late 2008, Mir and Headley met in Pakistan and discussed the prospect of an attack on the Jyllands-Posten newspaper in Copenhagen, Denmark.”

“In March 2010, David Coleman Headley pled guilty to 12 US federal terrorism charges, admitting that he participated in planning the November 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India and in planning later to attack the Danish newspaper.”

What? Declare those peace loving Samaritans as terrorists? The US has gone blind. Revoke the declaration or we will have Zaid Hamid declare Radio Pakistan to run in the US instead of Voice of America.

Attacking LeT’s facilitation networks is particularly important, since charitable donations LeT raises in Pakistan – its primary revenue source – are used to fuel LeT’s militant operations.
This is badly required as the normal innocent religious Pakistani are donating money without knowing where it is being spend.

Why US & West is always focussed on
    Pakistan?

Because your strategic assets don’t confine their activities to Pakistan. As indicated in the article this organization has attacked India, Afghanistan and USA troops. Further – it’s not like this action is coming out of the blue — your neighbors and allies have been complaining for years about this organization — maybe it’s time you actually do something other than place it on a banned organization list.

Why doesnot Pakistan ask Americans for evidence like it keeps asking the Indians about the Mumbai attacks. Every time we give the required evidence you come up with ‘give us evidence’. Try that gimmick with the Americans or the Israelis. Anyways freezing accounts is very not good. Because most of the attacks are caused by hooligans who are paid money to do the ‘work’. If there is no money how will they hire and pay these characters? Recommend

Pakistan is driven by paranoia and blames all their problems on external powers. Pakistan is in deep mess and unlikely to ever emerge from the nightmare it has been plunged into by its military. Recently what US is telling Pakistan is that to fix the mess Pakistan should re-examine its policy of supporting “state sponsored terror programs”.

    @ibnehamid:
Brother, which Court are you refering to ? India has taken the help of all Agencies to collect, document, collate and present the evidence so that any Court in the world can pass judgement. Evidence is strong enough to send all the participants and masterminds to the gallows. We should not forget that one of the murdering marauders was apprehended, making the case too weak even for the best lawyers to defend.
Pakistani Judiciary willl never ever have enough evidence to convict any terrorist or their collaborators within and outside the Government and send them to jail. Of course they can conveniently find concocted evidence to send an elected PM to meet the Almighty. Any Court that has a history of uprooting democratically elected Governments and sanctifying Military coup in a democracy will be universally called a kangaroo court. Unfortunately the standing of Supreme Court is a notch lower and there is nothing anyone can do to improve its image. The Judgements of a Court alone can earn it the respect of neutral Jurists.

In addition Pakistan is one of the few countries in the world that does not control all its land (tribal areas) . Finally we like giving away free villas to the worlds most wanted!
