RAWALPINDI:
A woman was allegedly shot dead by an uncle of the prime minister’s human rights adviser on Friday. The motive behind the killing was reported to be a property dispute.
Raja Yaqoob lodged a complaint with the Airport police alleging that his wife Sabira Bibi, 45, was shot in her legs by Imtiaz Khokar alias Taji, his sons Farrukh and Umar and their gunmen. She was taken to Benazir Bhutto Hospital, where she died of blood loss. According to the complainant, the incident took place while a commission appointed by a civil court was present at the disputed property in Dhoke Gangal.
The complainant’s lawyer, Ghufran Khursheed Imtiazi, told The Express Tribune that Khokhar had illegally occupied five kanals owned by Yaqoob and the court had granted a stay order in the case. However, the opposing party violated court orders and started building a marriage hall on the disputed property.
He said Yaqoob had filed a contempt plea and requested the city and regional police officers to provide security to his family as Khokhar had attacked their house earlier.
The civil court had appointed a local commission to inspect the disputed property and determine whether its status had been changed following the stay order, but the accused party intervened and opened indiscriminate fire, forcing the commission and complainants to leave the area.
The counsel also accused Airport police SHO Mian Afzal and City Police Officer Azhar Hameed Khokhar of not giving proper protection to his clients.
When contacted, Deputy Superintendent of Police Malik Tariq condemned the incident and said that the suspects had been booked on murder charges and strict action will be taken against them.
He also informed that the complainant has been provided with two armed policemen for security and that the cops present with the commission will be dealt with an iron hand for failing to protect the woman’s life.
Taji Khokhar is the brother of former National Assembly speaker Haji Nawaz Khokhar and the uncle of Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, the adviser to the prime minister on human rights.
