Pakistan’s human cockroaches

Published: August 24, 2010

The writer is a columnist, and TV and radio anchor fasi.zaka@tribune.com.pk

Pakistan, you are a failed state. Not because of Zardari. Not because of America. But because you are a failed people, all of us undeserving of sympathy. We are diseased, rotten to every brain stem, world please make an impenetrable fence around us, keep us all in so we don’t spread it to other people, other countries.

These were words I posted on a social networking website. I have an unusually negative mindset these days. It happened after I saw the video of the two teenage brothers brutally clubbed to death by a crowd frenzied with blood thirst in Sialkot. The police watched gleefully. The video has blurs at certain parts, but even this sensible sensitivity does not prevent one from seeing mists of blood flaying from the heads of these teens as they are hit relentlessly, and remorselessly, again and again.

The murderous crowd was truly representative of the richness of Pakistan. Some wear jeans, others shalwar kameez, some were bearded, others clean shaven. The Pakistanis had gotten together to have some fun.

Do not be shocked. This wasn’t isolated, it’s just that the crowd wanted to make sure their orgasmic moment could be captured for later viewing, at one’s pleasure. We blame our ill-educated brethren for the barbarity we witness, but that’s a self-serving lie.

The middle and upper classes are immune to education it seems. They hold opinions of everyday violence even if they have never raised their hand at anyone. If you believe Jews are the scum of the earth, all Ahmadis deserve to die or that Hindus are inferior, well why not two teenage boys?

I want Pakistanis to feel shame, in fact a substantial loss of self-esteem would be great. This is the only way for us to begin to doubt ourselves and the incessant excuses we make. Yes, the world is right to add restrictions on our visas, to see us as dangerous. If for even a while we felt we were the cockroaches of the human race, maybe we would get to the point we stopped the lies we tell ourselves and let this continue.

The fact is, if we had real democracy, there would be no internet in Pakistan, women would not be allowed out of their homes, education would come to a standstill and we would begin a programme of killing off every minority. Thank you corrupt generals and politicians, you keep this at bay with some sense of being answerable to a world that still has some humanity in it, even if you don’t.

And please, no excuses, no excuses. Don’t give us that, “If only there was true Islam they would be better”. I think a thousand years is enough, we can’t wait longer. And there was no America in existence for most of that, or even western colonialism.

You want to know just how sociopathic we are? In response to these killings some are happy to say we deserve earthquakes and floods. Typical. Don’t change yourself, but give credit to the indiscriminate and inhumane forces of nature. The floods are a tragedy, an atrocity and should never be used to bolster an argument that really only demands self-reflection.

And please, in your self-reflection don’t call us animals, most of them are benign vegetarians. Also don’t blame Sialkot; they were just unlucky because they are subject to scrutiny. There is so much more out there.

There is such a sense of sickening moral superiority in Pakistanis, it needs to be addressed. All we care about is foreign policy, eager to point out the hypocrisies of the world, silent on our domestic, or even local life. Why should the world take what you say seriously, why should you be a regional power, or a leader in the comity of Islamic nations?

Truth is, there is only one way to get change, and it’s not hanging the people who killed these boys. It is raising your voice to contradict people who advocate death for others, no matter who they are speaking of. To internalise that murder of any kind, for anyone is wrong. Sounds easy? Well just try it.

You see, this editorial was pleasant. Not because it pin pointed the the most pinching vices infused in our society but because Fasi had a heart to speak the truth! Literally, with all the media going crazy after the recent heart wrenching circumstances of Pakistan it is so ironic to daily switch on the tv and try to agree with the falsely- trying-to-be-optimistic anchors. The plastered smile sketched across their faces had started to irritate until i read the above article. Come one, for at least once, we should shun loudly these cliche sentences, “things would getter better” or “we will come out of this catastrophe as a united nation”.. blah blah!
We have tried to believe these sugar quoted sentences for all the past years. Maybe it is time we see ourselves as cockroaches and you never know- that might give us a true reflective insight into matters.Recommend

What happened in Sialkot was unimaginable. It was a barbaric and henious crime, I totally agree.

But do you think the animals that killed those people can be compared to EDHI sb, someone who has saved thousands of Pakistanis? or maybe you were comparing them to some of our artists and singers that are fund raising and helping with the floods? if not that then maybe Imran Khan is similar to those barbarians, his cancer hospital just isnt good enough? How about the poor people who helped remove the bodies after the Marghallah plane crash and even returned lacs of rupees worth of cash found at the site?Recommend

To those who are disagreeing with Fasi on calling our entire nation shameless, please understand that his main point is that allowing something like this to go unprotested is shameful. Really, what – WHAT – will it take for our people to get out on the streets and make sure that our nation’s voice sounds loud and clear within and outside our borders that we are NOT willing to be a part of this HEINOUS REALITY that is forming so quickly around us? We have taken lynchings and executions of a non-judicial kind on blasphemy, we have seen suicide bombings, we have seen gang rapes and women being paraded naked in front of entire villages, we see our govt. officials and “elected” representatives rape our country every day. What do we need before we are ready and able to protest? Will it be public executions of infants? Flagging and stoning old people whose kids can’t afford to sustain them? Murdering men and women who don’t conform to our version of social or religious conduct? Really…what calamity needs to befall this nation before it comes out of this coma? I’ve seen patients in a coma – they do not respond to anything even though their bodies are in perfect functional order. They just don’t know what is going on around them. They are not even brain dead! I feel like our nation is in a coma. And sure, hearing voices like those of Fasi’s will at least keep giving some food for thought to our comatose brains but the question that I have been losing sleep over (really, no exaggeration) is what will it take for us to wake from this state and once we do, what happens next???Recommend

I agree with some of or better to say most of your comments, eventhough I found the language too hard, too harsh. But beleive it or not, since this whole flooding has happened, I have not stopped thinking baout PAkistan. You see until a day before it happened, all that I hear on the radio, was how people blew eachotehr up, for being sunnit or Shia, and then this came, the flood, and I thought well, I am sad for the people’s suffering, but if these people preferd to use their energy and time, blowing each other up, instead of building their country and preparing them sleves for such tragedies, what else can I do. Unfortunately there is so much ignorance and hatrede and inhumanity amongst the Pakistanis that it makes it hard to think they will ever change. No one can give them a feeling of unity, a country, a nation, that can work together to build a nicer safer pakistan. I hope people like you can maybe awaken sth inside the pakistanis souls. There is more to life thatn to blow eachotehr up for Islam.Recommend

It’s been a while i have taken a side from the news channels and newspapers as it gives me alot of torture and tension. I heard about the incident from my fellow at work. Initially i just took it like a ‘hear-and-forget-thing’ but then many of the people around were discussing the event and i couldnt resist to finally youtube it. Well i still can’t believe my eyes what i have seen. I don’t have words to explain how i felt about those two brothers!! The pain they were in? How helpless were they in the middle of thousands? their eyes were searching for a single soul to come and get them out of the horror!! I still regret that why did i watch that clip, I really do.
I am still not sure as like many of others that what is exactly the main story and motto behind the murder? But one thing i can stand on and cry my heart out at, that even if those two brothers were guilty, even if they killed someone or beaten or were thieves, or whatever crime or sin they did! This was not the WAY … This was not the way they deserved at all.. It’s inhumane, utterly insane… I am totally clueless about my society? where are they going? what have we become? i havent heard any stories like this from my forefathers about things happening like this in their youth!!
I say, justice should be served. Which sadly wont bring them back to this curropt society again but atleast can set an example to the rest of the world that the country is still alive! (I wonder)
Today i am ashamed to be a part of this……… part of the world.Recommend

In the past I have always told my two sons not to pay to much attention about all the negative propoganda that we hear about Pakistan here in the West or atleast take it with a grain of salt. Whenever any new scandal broke about Pakistan, I used to tell them that it is all the wrong doing of our corrupt politicians and the common man in Pakistan is just an innocent victim of circumstances. Now I have lost this argument because of what happened in Sialkot. I can no longer tell them that Pakistanis are decent people. A lot of parents here in the west are going through the same dilemma as me. I wonder if Fasi should have titled his article as ” Pakistan’s Human Swine”. strong text
I strongly agree with the comment below:
I can understand your rage but you have gone overboard with misplaced disdain and a tinge of elitism. To suggest that somehow, the Pakistani public largely comprises inhuman jihadis is preposterous. There is plenty of humanity in our rural areas among the poor and “uneducated” as well. Consider for example that the person who first alerted authorities to Mukhtaran Bibi’s plight was the local village imam who made a sermon in the mosque condemning the culprits and preventing Mukhtaran from committing suicide (read Nicholas Kristof’s account of how the story in his new book). There are plenty of such unsung good people among Pakistan’s faithful poor as well. Prejudice exists in all societies and Pakistanis are no different. Mob mentality and violent voyeurism can be found all over the world as well. We should condemn atrocities such as the Sialkot incident and certainly work on reform but spewing out such vitriol for an entire nation serves little purpose other than sardonic shock value. Self-criticism is good — self-hatred is not.

He is intoxicated by the exuberance of his own verbosity. Pakistan consists of many well meaning people as well and what happened at Sialkot is atrocity at its worst and totally unforgivable but that does not mean that you call all Pakistanis cockroachs. I feel your dueRecommend

The article written is true but written by a person who actually cares about the country and so is everyone who has replied (I hope so). The part about us feeling like cockroaches, only a patriot could feel and thats the problem. There are so few patriotic people left in the country. The problem is that we have no respect to feel the shame. We are oblivious to the thought of respect and that includes all walks of life and for everyone around us.

What I am going to write is not directed towards the writer of this article or anyone specific but talking and saying something is simple. How many of us have actually lived up to it. How many of us have actually tried to make a difference in this country. No one wants to take a shred of responsibility for wats happening. But you know what we are good at, throwing the ball in the other court, wacking someone write in the face that its THAT PERSONS fault. And who can be a better target than our own president. Yes he is not the ideal person to run a country but leaders arise from amongst us and so me, you, everyone around me and you is responsible. I remember this song from “3 idiots” the bollywood movie that said “rishwat daina to khud papa nai sikhaya” and that is a hard cold fact. We might not think over it but in some way or the other all of us have seen it.

I really liked the article because though understated it highlights how we can put it on anyone at all to get it our backs.

And there is one major problem that we have. Again its not personal or not meant against anyones beleifs. We are so involved in religion that we are blinded by it. Everything that happens in and out of the Islamic block is attributed to the religion. Flood earthquake, war, peace. Everything. We need to let the concept of religion out of it, study the holy scripture like a text book and not keep it like a piece of jewellery. The only one thing that i appreciate highly of the western world is their ability to be practising muslims instead of “born muslims”. Its funny how only they are educated and we are not though it is our religion that gives infinite stress on acquiring all sort of knowledge.

Islam is supposed to be a liberating ideology not what it has been painted into the mind of almost every individual in the western world. The nuns have the same dress code as our hijab then why is it banned, because we carried bombs in it. Beards are considered and given as much importance and respect by jews but why not with us becuase the best sinical muslim minds had beards. Even the word muslim has become an official word of caution. Because we built it so. And we need to accept this for once and for all. We need to accept that we in desperation and frustration have gone on the wrong path. We need to take responsibility for the actions of our people.

I dont think that just sitting around and having the same though and voicing as one is any more sufficent. We need to take action. Everyone of us. And it starts from schools, homes, roads, offices. Any place where you can make a difference. The point is we need to make a difference. Everyone of us in our own way. By not breaking a red light, by not bribing, by not forcing our daughters and sisters and wives to quit studying and promoting studying, by encouraging the right people, standing by them, abiding by rules and most of all being tolerant. The point is “Please make a difference.”Recommend

Let’s put Pakistani predicament into context….

The main and perhaps the only problem with Pakistan is the Pakistan army who has been at the helm of affairs, directly or indirectly. Separation of religion and state is perhaps another evil that attributes to the Pakistan’s present state. One of the poorest country that is flooded with people can’t afford a large chunk (over 70% by some estimates) allocated to the army to buy guns and aircrafts. People need food, shelter and education, they can’t eat guns (I’m not referring to the floods). The army that is the property mafia of the country, persecutes civilians and has concocted the war threat through Kashmir has to abdicate its autonomy and needs to revert to its prescribed/constitutional function and go back to the barracks.

I’d not support the political factions as well, however, they are the lesser of the evil.

Let me be the devil’s advocate and pose this question, do you seriously believe there’s any alternative to the prosperity of Pakistan than either the army to relinquish its budget for the people and/or for the country to disintegrate? Except for Punjab, the three provinces have been deprived of their fair share of the constitutional revenue.Recommend

    True!
    Incident 1:
Two teenage brothers were murdered while people were standing around watching and doing nothing to help or stop the madness….

    Incident 2:
Millions of people were killed in the recent floods hitting many cities of Pakistan and the number of death continuously increasing because of lack of resources, while some people around the world are watching the news saying they deserve it and doing nothing to help. No donations, no charity for this nation!…

    My point of view:
There is absolutely no difference between the two sets of people. Both standing around and watching the game of death. In both cases, definite death of humanity!Recommend

What youre saying is true…however you should also keep in mind that humanity and freedom in our society has detoriated to the point that even if some of us do have the courage to speak up against the madness then we’d be either threatened, censored or if all else fails then just brutally killed while they stare at us and enjoy their 15 minutes of fame as their faces are caught on mobile phones and T.V cameras.
We need to straighten ourselves out but for that to happen we ALL need to change. Not just the social elites and those at the bottom of the food chain. I mean that the media needs to change its pessimistic point of view. The more they feed our rotted brains with miseries and project a view of disaster..the more let down we are going to feel. If they just SHOW us that Pakistan ISNT just going down the political and social tube..that there IS something good in out country..then maybe we will be shamed into behaving ourselves as we see that there IS good in the wilderness of our country. That there are people who are good. That being a Pakistani is something we can be proud of.

Pakistanis all over the world are greiving for these boys and their family. You need to remember that these two beautiful boys and their civilised family are also Pakistani. After seeing how well they conducted themselves in interviews and how patient and strong they are to have to live with the aftermath of this, you need to remember they too are Pakistani. So there is hope. We can bash ourselves all we want, but this one incident is a wake up call for Pakistanis everywhere. Thanks to the Pakistani media who has told this story to the world. The main culprits need to be punished, but also every single ‘police officer’ and ‘rescue worker’ who was watching is just as guily. I hope this incident shakes and wakes up Pakistan and some positive big changes occur in all of the country’s institutions. Every Pakistani should know the names of these two boys and what they went through. It is time for all to come together as one and say ‘NEVER AGAIN’.Recommend

Read you passage. Yes! self reflection in very important. But please define the light under which it should be done. Amr bil Maroof wa Nahi annil Munkar and also the translation of the Hadith that one who saves a life saves humanity, is the message in the last two sentences of your writing. In conjunction to the self reflection we youth of Pakistan need one more crucial thing to do which is still missing because we as a youth is so indulgent in our selves that we do not realize this as one of our prime responsibilities. KEEPING A VERY VERY CLOSE EYE ON THE GLOBAL CURRENT AFFAIRS AND ASSOCIATING IT WITH OUR DAILY LIFE. Yes the correlation exists. and it is unarguably considerable in magnitude too. Please do propagate this message along with identifying the social negativity that you just have. The voilent crowd/s you are talking about is not the production of one day or one event, but has precipetated in all of us in past two decades (post 1979) when injustice ruled and we as Pakistani citizens welcome it every time it is around. We are doing the same now because that is sadly the easiest and effective solution for temporary order. May Allah have mercy on us all.Recommend

I have posted two comments above (in the first one i wrote – ‘the culprits need to be taken care of’ – in England this is slang language for being punished) but I then realised not everyone will understand this type of language so I changed it in the second comment.

Back to the writers article, people did capture the footage of this horrific crime on their phones, but I don’t know what the intentions of these people were. If it wasn’t for them filming it then the world would not have seen this crime, and our hearts would not be mourning for the brothers and their family as much as they are.

There is some difference in hearing of a story like this and then actually seeing footage of it, the latter method seems much more powerful and stirring.

Thats all I wanted to say.

Thank you, Fasi, for stating the brutal truth and nothing but. It is good to know that religious and ideological insanity has not claimed every Pakistani yet.

I hope there are enough people like you to turn your country around and join humanity in the 21st Century.

Muslims are their own worst enemy because of what they’ve been born into. Until they realize that they themselves – not the Jews, not America, not anyone else – are to blame for their own misery and make a fundamental change away from fundamentalism nothing will ever change.

    My All Pakistani Friends:
You dont measure countries merely by their Achievements But to a greater extent by its Potential. Potential is Something Possible but not yet as Actual. People with Education Knowledge Skills and so called enlightened minds are there in society with the Possibility to make it Actual. Ignorants and ills in Society are like Weed and Weed you know is a useless plant that spoils the soil but still it’s green, flowery and colorfull. I think no matter how wild it is but Weed still is a natural plant, Its only that the Virtue of weed is not yet discovered. Dilemma of our elite class is that in self pride of their education, knowledge, awareness and wisdom they disconnect themselves from their origin. One of my elder used to tell me: In Pakistan every person having a Car does’nt know how to drive, Every person who has the money does’nt know how to spend and that everyone who so calling himself Educated does’nt know how to apply that education. Simply Capitalising your ownself on that Education is not the real application of that Education that you actually owe to your own society.Recommend

Actually, hanging the guilty would really help a lot. Beating them up, dragging their bodies through the streets and eventually hanging the bodies naked upside down would be just about fair.

We are not bad people. We are just people and as such we are both good and bad. Are we a failed nation? We are a nation. It has its ups and downs, successes and failures. As far as we stop swimming in denial of our issues and try to address them, there is always hope for change.

But the time to sugar coat our problems is long gone. We have some (or many) serious issues. We should be aware of them and try to fix them rather than accepting that ‘this is just how it is here’.Recommend

Dear writer, you definatly hit the nail with this article. For people like my self, born in Pakistan but living in Europe this is so true. To be honest I was ashamed of being a Pakistani after this episode. I remember in Europe we had a slogan VIP (Very Important Pakistani), seriousley that doesnt apply after this episode. We only have ourselves to thank for this. You are talking about sickening moral and I really dont see that we even have a moral. The sickness in Pakistan is beyond our reach, we cannot understand what lays at the ground and where the root comes from. If you ask me, the root is in our blood. Every whwere I see, there is curroption, there is iloyalty, there is fraud and so on. We dont have a conservative thought, or liberal thought, in fact we are unable to think whats best for our country. The only thing we are able to think or plan about is “Whats in it for me”. Where does this non moral and selfish thinking come from? All this comes from inside of us. And on top of that we are talking about Jihad and Islamic culture with no interference from the western society? The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Jihad starts from inside, at your homes with you families”. We refer to sharia laws and Islamic society, look around you, is there any place on this globe where you have true and rightful Islamic culture? We only have ourselves to thank for the way our “free” Pakistan has become today.

I must say your article is one of the very best I have read in a long time. May Allah bless us all!

A custom inspector, a police inspector, a Patwari, a land-grabber; all these are the new heroes of our youth. No wonder 7 young players of Pakistan team did not hesitate to make a quick buck without a second thought to the plight of a nation drowning in flood. A brilliant piece of work Fasi.
philosophical ’round – the – maypole’ comments too are in order but what is missing is the next course of action ie, what needs to be done with the full faced monsters who lynched to death the poor boys. After all their parents and their entire family must be provided justice and without any procrastination which is a hallmark of our degenerated system. Those diabolical sons Satan along with their despicable uniformed cohorts should be beheaded in the very place they clubbed to death the poor souls – as Abdul Rahman Malik has stated and which i hope he follows up on. Better still a crowd should be let loose on these devils so that their suffering surpasses that which they had subjected the young souls to.
The intelligence agency probing this incident has alleged that these two young, innocent boys were highwaymen and that the locals were tired of their activities. Well, if the debauched local herds of beast were tired of these two brothers then how come they are happy with the decadent- to- core police and our illustrious politicians and govt servants who too are rotten to the very core yet at the periphery they glitter like gold.Is it not time yet for these God damned people to give vent to their pent up blood letting frenzy against the pathetic lot that (mis) rules this unfortunate land of the pure ??????
I, for one pray that the wrath of Allah Subhanatalla visits all those murderers, their supporters, the police thugs, the silent spectators and that this Divine retribution overtakes and annihilates the whole lot, Amen.

May Allah Subhanatalla Bless and Grant a special place in Heaven to the Butt brothers and solace to their family especially to their parents, and may He recompense them in this world and in the hereafter, Amen.

An advice to all those who have played down the effects of the lack of Islam in our lives – Please wake up and see that all these and other goings- on in our society will be checked only if we were to adhere to Islam in totality and not when and where it suits us.Recommend

Dear all, wonderful comments. True in every bit. But have you forgotten Abugarib prison atrocities by the land you all love to be called a citizen of. Then why no one used such harsh words. These were 2boys (the culprits must be hanged ) and over there an entire nation of Iraq. Why you did not comment then, but wait there is a womens prison too and its photos have not been leaked under strict instructions by Obama.
Our citizen dr afia siddiqui handed over to the masters USA , to do as please by our worthy troika of generals, who still has a huge fan following and making a comeback. USA AND UK ,first they destroyed Iraq and now Afghanistan on false accusations.
We have tried all types of governments, all man made laws. Now lets give a chance to the laws made by God. Here lies the only solution, don’t interpret it the way western world does through their media ingrained in your brain. But try what you may , we will never succeed. When you have forgotten the commandments and ibadat as asked from you , then be prepared for more calamities and humiliation at the hands of the west. Go ahead APE the west in your dress, thoughts and while away your time with friends or in front of sick TV plays with beer in hand , everything will be alright.Recommend

    .
I do not agree with the second line. Our self esteem is already pretty low, but let us not self destruct here.
    .
There are 180 Million people in Pakistan – let us not generalize them all away in the span of a single web post. I’m 41 years old and I can’t even begin to count the number of good, principled people I have met in my life. But somehow everytime I talk about the good parts of society, people tell me that I’m missing the “real” Pakistan.
    .
Well I think I’m real. I think Edhi is real. I think the guy in my office who quitely goes every weekend to a flood affected area to help is real. I think the countless volunteers trying to help and motivated by nothing more than their conscience are real. I think the police-walla who shows up every day and controls the traffic as best he can is real.
    .

Look Fasi. I’m as horrified as anyone at this incident, and soul searching is great. But let’s not lose our collective perspective. Not now. Not when it is most needed. Not when all thinking and feeling Pakistanis need to be rooting for the country and trying to find a way out of our troubles.

There is no tolerance towards people of different beliefs and faith. It is high time Pakistan came first, what you believe in (faith) is need to considered your personal issue. Since Sharia law was introduced what peace it has brought. It has brought suffering and pain ask those who have lost their loved ones. We need to be honest to ourselves. State and religion do not mix and never will. It is infact an alien concept that we, personally could be wrong at times too. We even go far enough to decide what is the appropriate punishment for the unforgivable sins others have commited, eg lets kill these alleged thiefs…who cares about juvenile justice or even humanity… To change u must admit the fault. To succeed as a prosperous nation the first thing one needs to do is separate religion from state. The negative effects of the explosive mix of religion with politics can be seen anywhere and everywhere in the world and to create a country on the basis of religion (Pakistan, Israel) is a sure recipe for disaster.

Referring to the last paragraph, change will NOT come by exonerating those accused of this heinous crime. Ask the mother of these boys and she would wish the same treatment for those responsible. That’s called Karma. We need to set examples for our people by punishing these and all other perpetrators in the most ruthless manner. How else will you be afraid to carry out such atrocities. Our legal system (despite the much hyped judicial activism) has failed to bring out a cataclysmic change. A suo moto action by the CJP isnt enough, because cases keep lingering in courts for ages while the criminals run free on bail. Frankly speaking, there needs to be a thorough laundering of the unclean elements in our society by first setting aside the legal system (lunatics and scoundrels will always find ways to evade it) and a revolution is in order. There is no such thing as a White Revolution. Societies throughout history have transformed themselves by massive revolutionary movements- that may not always be in your or my interests :) We may be next to be guillotined because we may be too privileged, or too corrupt.

The question is: In the name of Pakistan, can we overcome fears for our personal life and property and sacrifice all we have? Nations don’t cum out of one’s rear. Freedom is achieved by blood and iron. Bismarck certainly wasn’t a maniac when he said this.

I have no shame of being called a COCKROACH infact I am worse than that. We also our forgiving ourselves. Because we forgive others we forgive ourselves also. We are at peace.Let us teach our children to forgive every one including themselves.

Let no one tell us about revenge, or about destroying evil in the world. Let us pleged to remove evil from within ourselves. We will be at peace.

    Mr.Fasih Zaka and all commentators.

Every created being has an animal inside, and with opportunity it comes out, and one such incident occured.in Sialkot. We should be thankful that there was only two youngsters not the whole family. In 1971 in East Pakistan mobs killed hundreds and thousands by a steel cutter, like the hindus slaughter a goat. You will find millions of instances from all over the world from the very inception of time. There is a ritual or it might just have happened that a mob of 10,000 Africans went wild in the african jungle with spears and killed everything that moved including Hippos and Elephants. The nature of that operation was so brutal that you will not be able to see it.

You cannot blame a nation or any religion. You need to understand the very nature of creation and the numbers always had something to do with it. This human roaming on this earth will simply not learn the good things. Its been 15 billion years since humans started walking these continents, no results so far. A few who gets the lessons, do fairly well and who do not learn the lessons, do what todays rulers and the rest of the human races are doing.

As far as the pakistanis are concerned we need legislation and rules for punishment real harsh punishment for breaking human law, society laws and country laws. Simple tit for tat,or shariah laws. Democracy cannot give this, because you will need to get 12 jurrors or money will come into play. I can go on and on, but I sincerely hope this serves the purpose of getting all of us to learn and grow mentally.Recommend

    YOU GAVE ME A HOPE.

I left Kashmir due to the unrest there coz I was not a muslim. Lot of people have died there since then. Different people have different opinion on who is to be blamed for this. I had my opinion also. To be honest, I blamed the support from across the border for that and continued to think like that and always had an impression that things would never become normal in MY KASHMIR till people don’t realise the wrongs that are happening either in Pakistan or Kashmir.

After reading the artical and the comments (most of them), I am pleased to know that there are people in Pakistan who want a change. A change for the better. A change when I will be proud to say to the world, ” I have a Pakistani Friend”. Thanks for giving me that hope friends.Recommend

    Hi Mr. Zaka,

I applaud your insight & courage to speak the unvarnished truth. While you seem to have quite a few supporters, I’m sure vast majority will malign you for handing them a mirror to see the horrible, ugly truth & it hurts!

My two cents’ worth would be to seize the moment & organize a powerful rally of like-minded folks who are disgusted by this kind of barbarism, hypocracy & corruption in the nation. No level of formal education will rid the nation of this ingrained, cultural morass. And don’t ever expect that the government or the politicians would see the light of the day & come to your rescue. Politicians are just there to get their & their friends’ coffers filled by any means possible & get even with their enemies, while they are in power. Country be damned!

Please awaken as many of your compatriots as possible & make a difference in a very positive way. Godspeed!Recommend

I agree with Fasi with every single word said. BUT. why dont we try answering the question that “what is it that has made us blood thirsty?”
I think its the growing frustration thats becoming more and more engraved in every single Pakistani these days be it a toddler or an old man trying to cross the road. Look at all the stimuli around us: inflation, poverty, secularism, loadshedding, cost of living, lack of medicine, flood, corruption and last but not the least our cricket!…everything around us forces us to grab the baton and smash the head of the person next to us. And then comes the media, independent it is for sure but it appears there isnt anything good happening in our country. If you ask me i would rather prefer living in the stone age than watching the crying faces of the people in my country on my TV.Recommend

If as you claim that the people of Pakistan have failed then why would you or so many commenting on this article be condeming this incident. Pakistans have not failed nor have we as a nation lost our sense of direction or conseience. Every one who saw this felt disgusted ,we would have failed if we had not shown our concern.
On the other hand look at the tremendous response to the floods relief efforts or for the IDPs ,the amount of money and material paid and distributed is commendable. Pakistanis today stand highest in charity donations although some surveys place them at fourth.

If at all we have failed is when we choose leaders that let us down and for that the blame rests entirly on us.Recommend

As one commissioned in the PAF in 1968, it gives me great pain to see how a once beautiful country is inevitably sinking into the black hole of anarchy and lawlessness. Everyday bombing and terrorist activities are taking its human toll, besides the unprecedented flood that has submerged the vast agricultural land. The latest bombing in Lahore and Quetta showed how deep is the fissure. I feel that the only way out of this morass is a renewed pledge to bolster and hold on to democratic order, however corruption ridden or chaotic it might be. I think Pakistan’s experimentation of Islamising the state and politics has totally failed and the earlier they realize the better. The sectarianism and the religious fanaticism is eating the very foundation of nationhood. The way out to me is to totally discard religion-based politics and strive for a secular Pakistan. Pakistanis should get busy rebuilding their ravaged country instead of having grandiose plan of expanding the zone of influence beyond Hindukush. It is also time to get out of Kashmir syndrome – first it cost East Pakistan and now Pakistan itself in danger. Pakistan must keep the military and especially the ISI under control. The talk of another Martial Law is the worst that can happen to the unfortunate country. The Mullah-military nexus has ruined the country in which the politicians and bureaucracy played the second fiddle. My hope is on the Pakistani intellectuals who needs to rise on the occasion and play their part. Amen.Recommend

“Yatha Raja, thatha Praja” is an old saying in Sanskrit, which means “As is the ruler, so are the subjects”. This is universally true, as much in India as in Pakistan.
But who rules Pakistan, The elected President, the Military or the Imam?.

Since 1947, the moral fibre displayed by one or all of the above three has had its impact down the line. Today we have incidents relating to Ajmal Kasab, Salman Butt, Mohd Asif, Mohd Aamer. and those mentioned above by Fasi These are mere manifestations of the origins, and I quote the respected Shahryar Khan, when he mentioned “moral fibre” following the ‘spot-fixing”

Pakistan had a very rich tradition of music…over they have destroyed it, along with the film industry and other performing arts. The result is, all their best talent is now here in India and what did they take from us? Two of the most wanted people from India. (Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon).Today, we are reaping their artists’ talent and on the other hand, our rouges that they have sheltered are surely not doing any charitable/constructive work in their country.
In only the last month, the media in Pakistan has accused India of Lahore blasts, Cricket match fixing and even the damn floods! And just when I was wondering how the hell will they blame the sialkot incident on India/US/Israel…..Here they are! I read of the guys saying the Indian TV channels are to be blamed!!
If you give undue importance to these conspiracy theories, just think of the consequences:
    1. The people actually involved in Lahore blasts will not be chased.
    2. The corrupt players will get a lease of life and they will know that no matter what they do, they will be able to get away with it &
    3. The Landlords who diverted the flood waters toward the residential area to protect their crops will do it again if such floods ever come.
    Do the math guys…Recommend

    Re: Air Cdre Ishfaq’s letter:

He wants Pakistan’s intellectuals to rise to the occasion to solve Pakistan’s problems. Let me submit that Pakistan has, unfortunately, not been able to produce much in the way of intellectuals. Mediocrity has been the order of the day because talent has never been cultivated/employed due to a system of patronage and/or graft. University professors, newspaper editors, lawyers and columnists, all are political partisans with very little intellectual maturity. They don’t read books on, history, philosophy or sociology etc. One can hardly find even a dozen journals of international standards published in Pakistan with any regularity. The biggest source of ‘wisdom’ is a tabloid newspaper called “The Daily Jang” which has a total circulation of about 250,000 in a country of 170 millions. University professors are not required to publish anything at all as a requirement to earn their tenure at the university. All they need to do is to belong to one or the other political party.Recommend

Very brave but overwhelmingly apologetic. Pakistan is an assortment of very aggressive, mutually exclusive cultures. Only the Jat Sikhs of East Punjab compare. The thing with aggressive cultures is that they collapse. Sparta, Greece, Rome, even the Americans (and they are withering) all testify to this. Human have evolved in autonomy, equality, absence of hierarchy and human habitations of human proportions (read no mass society) Pakistan continues to fail on all these counts. India with its fake democracy is fairing only slightly better. Only a federation of autonomous, endogamous villages of equals can cure such pathologies.Recommend

It is this region–Majha–Sialkot, Lahore, Gujranwala, Amritsar, Gurdaspur & Taran Taran with its ancient madness. The Pathan/Baloch folks too might have instances of such barbarity but they wrap it in Shariah. The Majhails rooted in elaborate feudalism and shaped by a bloody history, on the other hand will kill for recreation and dance with butchered limbs. They’re fed a bloodthirsty bravado right from early childhood and bloom into latent vampires at adulthood. Look at what the Majhail Sardars did to East Punjab in the 80s! You want to change that? Start with dismantling feudalism, now don’t get over excited and start industialising a la India. Because our media is suddenly so active these days, we witness fresh displays of torture and death almost every single day interspersed with other depressing and frustrating news from the political front. Everybody has skeletons in their closets, every nation has it’s murderers and it’s silent spectators.

However, thank God, that there is now increasing change in our society. The perpetrators of the brutal Sialkot murderers will be brought to justice, inshAllah as long we keep pressing for it. Even after so many of being swindled by the pakistani’s (us), it is still rich but we are so poor at heart and mind.

Imagine when someone tells you that the floods are due to “american and indian new superweapon which fires a projectile in the air and presto you have rain”.

For the police, i recommend a practice, every morning, they should be rounded up and spanked by the people and in the evening, the police people can spank the civilians. SHAME ON ALL OF US, Pakistanis. Making Highways, Mansions or Shopping Malls is NO or very poor reflection as to who we are, UNLESS each and everyone of us STOPS “TRYING” instead of Focusing and doing something Positive and NOT relying on others but your own selves..
IF you wish to be recognized and not buried alive..then WAKE UP…Please.Recommend

Pakistan should shoulder with immediate neighbours not some one 5000 or 10000 KM away for support.
India could be great help if pakistan change its mind set and get with terms with reality.
Help from western countries is the main reason for disparity in pakistan thats why it is a fail state.
But if common man will understand that biggest enemy of pakistan is not India but its own leaders who only think about themselves not the poor Jawed, Karim or uneducated Fatima who lives in villages of this beautiful country.Recommend
