Olympics 2012: Pakistan lose 7-0 to Australia

LONDON: World champions Australia defeated Pakistan 7-0 in a do-or-die battle for both the teams playing men’s Olympic hockey in London on Tuesday.
Australia now lead Pool A and have qualified for the semi-finals.
Pakistan had earlier defeated South Africa 5-4, raising its chances of securing a semi-final berth. However, this defeat shakes Pakistan’s Olympics dream.
Team Green had earlier drawn its inaugural match against Spain 1-1, won the second match against Argentina 2-0 and lost against Great Britain 4-1.
Hockey legend Olympian Hasan Sardar had called Pakistan’s match with Australia a tough test and said that to win against them, it would require performance from each and every player of the team.
Another legendary Olympian Samiullah had said that there is little hope for the underdogs to beat the Australians or either pull a draw as Australia is undoubtedly the best team playing in the tournament.

I recall what Badshah Khan once said when asked on Pakistan’s dismal performance in Seoul Olympics in which it stood at no.7 (8 was bottom). He said he did not want to comment on regional teams. “Show me a Pakistan team I will comment”. That probably was in 1986 or so. We don’t seem to have changed one bit and are regularly losing not just in Hockey but in Cricket as well as in Squash. Lets build Pakistan teams purely and purely on merit.

Clear lack of skills and experience. What is needed is promoting sport at the grass root level and organize local leagues. Winning or losing in international events should not be only scale to measure success or failure. UK hardly win any world championship in football and in many other sports but that does not mean that they are behind, it is still a place to go to enjoy, learn and earn from many sports. We should have a similar goal, international success will come automatically.

Pakistan and India would have to invest heavily if they would like to see any future hope for medals in hockey. Holland, Germany, Australia in a short span have upped the hockey standards and moved their teams to medal level standards with appropriate training and facilities and feeder programs.

yes, actually this is what i was telling to one of my pakistani friend yesterday, that there is nothing like ALLAH’s will.
why would he like to interfere on the part of a lazy team. and that too in a game of hockey.
there are just too many mishappenings going on in this world, and he would like to correct them, rather than interfering in hockey.
the weaker teams just are thrown out, like india was forced to bow out without winning a single match, while a relatively more hard-working pakistani team did win some matches before it lost to stronger and formiddable AUSTRALIA.

Just waste of public money. The PHF officials, coaches, managers, and all those stooges who accompany the Olympic squad shoud face the firing squar. Just forget about the present team and start building a new team by training youths aged 14-18 on merit and prepare a really dream team for Pakistan. Just see how the Chinese prepare their youths.

Dismal tactics! pound for pound Greenshirts were never a match for the Kookuburas. The asian style “attacking hockey” mentality bites the dust everytime in key matches against european and australian teams. They only way we stood a chance was to play out a draw for as long as possible attacking only on turnovers in the australian half. Oz’s made many mistakes but they would have made even more under pressure of not scoring and losing out on their pole position in the group.
