LAHORE: This is with reference to the news item in your newspaper titled “CM Shahbaz Sharif renames Lawrence Road to Majeed Nizami Road” (July 28). Why must every act of a politician, even one as smart as Mr Sharif, be devoid of good sense? Does the Punjab chief minister not know that no one will ever call the road by its new name and that it will continue to be what it has been for close to a 100 years?
Secondly, does he not know that there are in Lahore, virtually thousands of nameless main roads, streets and alleys that make the simple act of giving directions a nightmare? We know Mr Nizami rendered exemplary service both to the country and to the chief minister’s family, but it certainly would have been more sensible to name a nameless road rather than messing around with Lawrence.
