LAHORE: Nearly 20 per cent of the livestock in Pakistan has been washed away in the worst ever floods of the country’s history, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Nawaz said on Friday.

Prof Nawaz was talking to a 12-member delegation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) that called upon him at his UVAS office. The delegation was headed by Hiroshi Okabe.

The delegation and the host discussed the project titled The Master Plan Study on Livestock, Meat and Dairy Development in Sindh. The project has been implemented under a cooperative agreement involving the JICA and Sindh government’s livestock and fishery department.

Prof Nawaz briefed the delegation about the UVAS volunteers helping the flood-affected farmers in the southern Punjab.

Flood Disaster Management of Livestock

The UVAS is organising a national workshop on Flood Disaster Management of Livestock on August 25.

The purpose of the workshop is to discuss the problems that have arisen in the livestock sector, as well as definition and implementation of remedial measures so that the losses can be kept to minimum. The workshop aims at providing a roadmap for safeguarding the livestock population, to the government and the non-government organisations (NGOs) providing relief services in the flooded areas.

UVAS officials said it will also help devise strategies to combat such disasters in the future.

Sixty two experts in three categories – feed intervention, health management and indirect support to livestock owners – will participate in the workshop.
