Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene admitted his side was outplayed as India registered a 21-run win in the opening One-Day International (ODI) in Hambantota.
Virat Kohli, named man of the match, hit an impressive 106 for his 12th century as India scored 314 for six before restricting Sri Lanka to 293 for nine despite Kumar Sangakkara’s valiant knock.
However, Jayawardene was confident of a comeback in the five-match series. “We left too much for the big-hitters in the end to do,” said Jayawardene. “We never had the momentum going. We’ll try to refocus and come back strong.”
Meanwhile, Kohli was a pleased man. “I had a positive mindset to just go out there, hit the boundary balls and make sure I execute them well,” said Kohli.
The second ODI will be played tomorrow at the same venue.
