PPP to nominate Rehman Malik for Senate seat again

KARACHI: Only a few days after his surprise resignation from the Senate, the government has decided to nominate Rehman Malik for a seat once again, Express News reported on Wednesday. Malik had resigned on July 10.

However, the final decision will be taken after a high-level meeting between the Pakistan Peoples Party members tonight in Karachi.

Malik is expected to submit his nomination papers to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on July 19 or July 20.

Malik’s resignation announcement followed the earlier suspension of his upper house membership by the Supreme Court after he failed to provide necessary documents proving he had given up his British citizenship.

According to Malik, he had wound up his business in the UK in 2008 and withdrawn his British nationality on the directives of former premier Benazir Bhutto and her husband President Asif Ali Zardari.

Correction: An earlier version of this article had incorrectly mentioned the dates Rehman Malik is expected to file his nomination papers. The correction has been made.

    Although I don’t like him for his statements that most of the times don’t make sense at all but I do give him applause him for preferring his country over UK. IMO, Rehman Malik should be appreciated for withdrawing his UK citizenship.

    It is the job of EC to examine his nomination papers. If he proves that he has renounced his UK citizenship then there should be no problem. This can be done in a minute without making baseless assumptions.Recommend

    It’s important he n his wife both to be citizens of Pakistan, otherwise the whole cry of dual citizenship will be worthless.

    @ Nasir Mahmood, you are right. It does not seem that he has submitted his British Citizenship renouncement certificate. Had he done so, I am sure media would have flashed/printed the certificate for the public. But this has not happened.

    Anyway, his nomination will be challenged. And this will be test for the impartiality of newly appointed EC.Recommend

    @RS:
    You said “It’s important he n his wife both to be citizens of Pakistan, otherwise the whole cry of dual citizenship will be worthless.”
    Does that mean the family of C. Nisar and IK should also have only one nationality for them to take part in politics? I agree with you in principle that it is a clever decision to have the family keep the foreign nationality and not the politician himself so he can get it anytime he wants. However, in a civilized democracy you cannot control each member of every politician’s family.
    Regards,
    Mirza

    Wow what the acceptance and obedience of the Supreme Court’s decisions by the PPP’s government and Supreme Court’s decision regarding Rehman Malik’s dual nationality and disqualification goes to dust bin……..
    And if this is acceptance, obedience, supremacy, honor and grace of Supreme Court and its decisions in PPP’s eyes then what shall be the disobedience???????

    @ Nasir Mahmood, you are right.Whatever papers he submitted as proof of his giving up British nationality were not acceptable to .SC. His nomination will be challenged and it will be interesting what the EC decides. Will it overrule SC?
