LAHORE:

The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has said that it is currently engaged in the process of rehabilitating Warsak hydropower project, which has been running for 50 years.

In this connection, Wapda will construct another underground powerhouse of 375 megawatts at Warsak, which will take the generation capacity to 618MW.

“Financial arrangements for the underground powerhouse are being negotiated with financial institutions and there are indications that they may provide about 75% of the funds,” said Wapda in a press release.

The need for rehabilitation arose as the condition of generating units of the project deteriorated over
time despite extensive repair and maintenance due to heavy sedimentation in
Kabul River.
