More empowerment: Call for making G-B a province

Published: June 12, 2012

GILGIT:

Because of the Kashmir issue, the people of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) have suffered for over six decades. It is time that the issue be resolved and G-B be declared a constitutional part of Pakistan.

This was stated by the G-B Qaumi Movement President Abdul Waheed during a press conference at the Gilgit Press Club on Monday.

Waheed argued that the international powers wanted to carve a new region comprising G-B, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and part of China to protect their economic interests.

Flanked by other party leaders, including General Secretary Haroon Khalid, he said that the recent visit of the US diplomats to Gilgit was part of the larger plan, which, if success, will deprive Pakistan of at least two regions – G-B and AJK. “Pakistan should take note and immediately declare G-B a province,” he added.

The speakers also highlighted the geostrategic location of G-B, which links Pakistan to China, India and the central states. Khalid said that Pakistani state had almost gone bankrupt but said they would still prefer to be part of it.

This statement would shock any person with a sane mind

“” Khalid said that Pakistani state had almost gone bankrupt but said they would still prefer to be part of it.”"”

If I say that I want my children to go to the worst school in the city, I will be seen as a very bad parent. If I say that I would admit my sick wife to the cheapest and worst maintained hospital, I would be seen as a careless and selfish husband. If I feed the worst possible food to my guest, I will be seen as a bad person and bad host.

But Mr. Khalid wants to be called a patriot by chosing the worst and bankrupt country for his future generations….how does that make sense.

If I love my family, my tribe and my region, then I would never want them to be part of a bankrupt and socially cancerous country. May be time has come that we re-evaluate definition of patriotism.

Subjecting someone to a bad country, bad society, bad food, bad clothing, bad shelter, bad school and bad hospital should never be seen as a positive attribute and patriotism. It should be the way around: taking someone out of a mess, like rescuing from a house on fire or a bad situation should be seen as an act of loyalty, sincerity and faithfulness.

If we want to shed colonial mentality and mind of a slave, then we need to get rid of this legacy of the colonial powers which is called Pakistan.

Besides Gilgit Baltistan is not a constitutional part of Pakistan and UNO has asked Pakistan to withdraw from GB. So the issue of patriotism does not apply to residents of GB. It only applies to the citizens of Pakistan.

Khalid says, “Khalid said that Pakistani state had almost gone bankrupt but said they would still prefer to be part of it.”

How can you expect empowerment by becoming province of a bankrupt country??
