10 things I hate about Amitabh Bachchan

Published: August 15, 2010

1. Paa.

2. What he did in and to 80s cinema. With Deewar in the mid-70s, the Angry Young Man was born.  He made for a morally ambivalent iconoclast, layers of complexity behind the sullen, taciturn exterior. By the end of the 80s, this angry young man was a tired old pastiche of himself.

3. Each of his comic portrayals of drunkenness.

4. Abhishek Bachchan. Need I say more?

5. Apparently more is needed, so here it is, Aishwariya Rai Bachchan.

6. The airbrushed, stage-managed megalomaniacal Bachchan dynasty, the ongoing reverie of some relentless PR machine. Here is a collection of closely supervised robots reading off a script and presenting an image of familial unity as sterile as it is implausible.

7. The fact that with the possible exception of hemorrhoid cream, there is not a single product that one can legally retail that Bachchan has failed to endorse in recent years. Yes, he’s a cast iron legend and no one can take that away from him, but oh my, he’s making a concerted effort.

8. British Raj period romance Mard. Surely someone owes humanity at large an apology for that?

9. He’s a terrible ham, and has been for years.

10. He can act, and so well. He possesses a truly rare screen presence and, when he bothers, exceptional comic timing and that he is, if one can think back that far (to Abhimaan, for example), capable of subtle, nuanced, restrained performances. And that with all this going for him, he chose instead to become a dancing bear.

this one is quite terrible with exception of a few points, my version ;)

10 thing I hate about Amitabh Bachchan

    1) The deep sight of his, as if trying to translate people into something with a slight open mouth.(i doubt his intention then)

    2) Desperation to be a sales man; selling from one rupee ‘choran’ to a million rupees show for himself and his “Talented” lad.

    3) The famous TILT while standing, appears to me more like a back problem or a lame leg.

    4) The breath, the over emphasis, the weight and over weight of the words spoken out of his mouth. especially when he tries to sound like a Scholar.

    5) An un-necessary use of word “Haain” by him in strange fashion mostly in his earlier movies.

    6) Not marrying Rekha and landing with Jaya Bahaduri, who is always trying to prove that her family is a super one, coming from planet Krypton :p

    7) The Publicly open relations with politician of bad reputation.

    8) Taking away all the credit of ‘Sholay’ along with the public appreciation. Although he played a very good part in the movie Dharmendra was the Lead.

    9) Doing movies, that are beyond the dignity of a movie star of his age, like Boom, Nishabd, RGV ki Aag etc.

    10) Whatever he did in the KBC Season 2, from the word ‘Dwiteer’ to all the ‘not so funk’ stuff done to be cool, was just too indigestible for Amitabh’s Audience.Recommend

Complete and utter non-sense. That too for a man, who over the decades has entertained us like no one else. Without whom our family weddings, chill outs with friends and random musings would have been left soul less. I expected better from Tribune!Recommend

Listen, Amitabh is a legend and we respect him – regardless if we are Pakistani or Indian – this man unites us, now leave him alone!Recommend

    Faiza,
Well while everyone is entitled to their opinion, I could not help but my give my two cents:

I am not a big fan of ‘Bollywood’ so it is very simple, I ‘choose’ not to write about it. Try doing the same. Perhaps a better approach than trashing something or someone simply based on your bias.
Regardless of the country we are from, and of our opinions of Bollywood and/or the Bachchans, we simply can not disregard the fact that the man is a legend, globally! So give credit and respect where it is due.

yeah yeah i also admit that Amitabh Bachchan is a damn good actor.. but mind it he is just an actor not a Saint .. so he may have few things which may annoy people..
i also dont like many things about Sean Connery and these columns are meant to share such things.

although the published 10 things were so terrible. i consider ASAD HASNAIN’s 10 points much more relevant and 10 times better than the published 10 points to hate in AB.

Don’t take personal dudes. u also reserve a right to dislike any body. ;)Recommend

God!!And I thought I was the only one!!I agree 100% with ALL 10 points. And why should we avoid writing about Bollywood if we’re not fans? Excuse me? Is that your definition of freedom of expression? This might be a practice in India, it certainly is not here.We don’t hold back in the name of false patriotism, image and all that. Faiza and all other writers have the right to say what they feel like. And yes, AB is an actor, NOT a Saint as some people insist on making him.So relax! Thanks for writing this Faiza!Recommend

Criticise Amitabh Bachchan but at least do it well (he makes it so easy)

1- the fact that he had demi-god status in India and now the world – he’s an actor every one – relax!

2- his multi-colored, badly dyed goatee that he strokes as if it were well… that he stroke a lot.

3- the fact that je probably has a garage, attic and basement full of lifetime achievement awards – there were other actors who achieved stuff Bollywoord. Lets recogniose them. Nasseruddin Shah? Shimmi Kapoor? Kabeer Bedi?

4- The stand off with Shahrukh Khan. From Kon banega crorepati to steal scening in Karan Johar movies – Bachchan’s rivalry with Khan is childish and actually a bit sad. There are enough easily impressed Bollywood fans to go around.

5- That he is known as ‘Big B’ – how pompous is that?

6- His many roles as the ‘older man’ with the younger woman – cheeni kum, nishabd – it just gets gross after a whle.

    7- over enunciation

8- Poor career moves. When was the last time he was in a good movie? Oh, yeah now I remember – he’s a star he doesn’t have to be an actor anymore.

9- That he tweets about himself (your like my grandfather’s age. Please stop trying to be hip)

10- Amitabh Bahcchan in drag. “Meray angnay mein…” Queens every where will never forgive you.

11, 12, 13: Abhishek, Aishwariya and Jaya – using the Bachchan name to kickstart or maintaing dying careers

14- His many characters where he magically solves problems by “just being Amitabh Bachchan”

15- Guest appearances: He is just a man. Why does everyone care so much?

16- The Big B brand and the disgusting amounts of money that he is paid to stand around weddings, stages and exhibitions

17- The dichotomy of values he tries to represent – a ‘hip’ old man who makes his children do ten poojas before shadi. All tailored specifically to cash in on the Indian middle class. So maybe I should say lack of any genuine stance or personality.

    18- Hair plugs

    19- His sense of humour

20- The fact that he will always always be nominated for an award no matter how ridiculous his performanceRecommend

    @Mohammad Abbasi
Amitabh Bachchan is just an actor ,and nothing more. Cliches like “he unites us” is irrelevant and over used. By the way how can he unite us. Indian films are also being screened in many countries because of their entertaining value and subsequently commercial spin offs. There is nothing more to it. I watch Brad Pit. He does not unite us.Lets stop turning ordinary people into heroes.Recommend
