KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MNA Fauzia Wahab has fallen “seriously ill” and is currently undergoing treatment in an intensive care unit of a private hospital in Karachi, Express News reported Sunday.

Wahab, who had earlier undergone a gall bladder surgery, was admitted to Orthopaedic and Medical Institute (OMI) on Saturday night.

According to the PPP’s media cell the doctors have put her on a ventilator.

The PPP leadership has appealed to everyone to pray for her health.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s leader Babar Ghori and PPP’s Saeed Ghani, who were present at the hospital, told the media that her condition was serious.

Ghani said that Wahab is an important asset for the PPP.

However, Gall bladder surgery is one of the least riskiest, one day operation if done Laparoscopicly. Unless the pancreas gets disturbed during operation which can result into pancretitis. Thats very dangerous.

@Noble Tufail: Do you not realise that even from minor procedures, some patients have serious complications. I have seen patients in the US die following relatively benign procedures such as appendectomies. You are so quick to complain about facilities without knowing the facts. Do you think people in the US blame the system after a PE occurs following surgery? It can happen everyone but in other countries people realise that all surgery entails risks and complications- no matter how minor.

@Stenson Yes people do hold the systems not the people accountable if something goes wrong in US. I wish you had read about Dr.Donald.M.Berwick’s work. His (IOM)’s landmark report “to err is human” was first published in 2001 that opened the eyes of the world to a horrible phenomenon of unsafe conditions in healthcare industry, despite the most modern, technologically equipped, best skills mixed hospitals. Errors still happen not because of individual performance but because of poorly designed systems. It recommended that we must design such a system that prevents errors and promotes patient safety continuously. I am sure your threshold of “acceptable/expected” error will be different in case of your own loved one isn’t it ?? now she is on ventilator what if she God forbid ends up with VAP (ventilator associated pneumonia) apparently with no one’s deliberate error but through a weakly defined infection control program of ICU .. is it still acceptable?? to me of course not .. the hospital did not admit her to treat Pneumonia or cholecystectomy complications but for a simple cholecystectomy. Good hospitals benchmark their rate of complications with similar hospital around them and of course an acceptable level of complications (being unsafe) is drawn, however efforts can and should not stop to eliminate the errors because we pledge to “do no harm” and promote safety…. and US does not set any gold standard but the science/evidence and the best practices.Recommend

Although gall stone surgery is considered to be relatively a minor category procedure but complications can arise from any procedure. I suspect a major blood vessel was hit during the key-hole surgery resulting in torrential haemorrhage. My fear is that there is no credible vascular surgeon and therefore this problem could not be dealt with. She required more than 30 units of blood and such vast amount of loss of blood leads to multiple organ failure including brain, kidney and lung damage. I am speculating this what I heard what happened to her. I hope and pray her condition improves but the chances of survival are less than 50:50

After reading the following report in The Pakistah Today
    http://www.pakistantoday.com.pk/2012/05/28/city/karachi/fauzia-wahab-hospitalised/
the history has changed. Initial impression was as if she had complication during the surgical procedure but apparently she had surgery earlier and was discharged home but was readmitted as her condition deteriorated. However, she has been transfused phenomenal amount of blood probably due to internal haemorrhage. I fear there was an inordinate delay in recognising blood loss into her abdomen.
