Conviction for helping the CIA

Published: May 24, 2012

DUBAI: There will be many people who are going to support what Dr Shakil Afridi did — and I will not dispute the fact that one can have serious reservations regarding the prolonged presence of Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad. However, the doctor did break the law of the land and that makes him a traitor — as such the punishment given to him is justly deserved.

Instead of helping CIA for dollars, Afridi should have informed his own country’s intelligence agencies about OBL. He has committed treason and as such he should have been put on death row. The man who is not loyal to his own soil deserves no mercy.

If a citizen of a nation helps another country’s foreign agency working clandestinely, is it a crime? This is the issue. If local Pakistani intelligence was involved, it would have looked like a joint operation and it would not have undermined the nation’s sovereignty and reputation but Dr. Afrisi just wanted money. I think Dr. Afridi should have informed the local intelligence authorities. We all agree that OBL has done immeasurably harm to Pakistan and he deserved being served justice for hurting innocents but the principle is whether or not the US close their eyes to a citizen working for another country’s agency on its own soil.
