LAHORE:

A free drug bank for journalists and their families was set up at the Lahore Press Club on Wednesday with a gift of Rs1 million worth of medicine from Jinnah Hospital and Allama Iqbal Medical College.

Prof Javed Akram, principal of AIMC and CEO of Jinnah Hospital, signed a memorandum of understanding with LPC President Arshad Ansari handing over the consignment of medicines, which were donated to the hospital by the World Health Organisation, International Health Partners and other donor agencies.

Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) representative Adeel Haider assured the Press Club representatives that they would ensure a regular supply of medicines to the free drug bank.

Prof Akram said that the AIMC/Jinnah Hospital would provide a pharmacist to work at the drug bank part-time to give advice about what medicine to take and in what dosage and combinations. She would also advise patients about generic medicines in case of non-availability of prescribed brands.

He said that specialists from the hospital would also pay a weekly visit to the club to examine members and their families. He said a laboratory would also be set up at the Press Club and members would be able to get diagnostic tests such as MRIs, CT-scans, X-rays and blood/urine tests from Jinnah Hospital for free.

Prof Akram said that they would issue ‘health ID cards’ to Press Club members for provision of medicine or surgical or diagnostic treatment.
