From the army playbook

Published: May 23, 2012

DALLAS, TX, US: Both Ejaz Haider and Air Vice-Marshal (retd) Shahzad Chaudhry, who have written several articles on these pages in recent weeks, seem to be reciting from the army playbook. The military wants to retreat from the corner it has pushed itself in and — one could say — is using these gentlemen to make its case.

This case is the right case and in Pakistan’s national interest. But its implementation is going to be difficult because the army itself deliberately inflamed people’s passions and is now unable to push the genie of inflamed passions back into the bottle.

Dear Ayesha, for a second we place you in the boots of Chief of army staff. How would you justify the brutal killing of 24 soldiers and officers, how would you face wives, mothers and children of those killed, how would you face other soldiers and officers once you will go out in the battle field. Those will ask with silent eyes that, will they also be butchered like their comrades and no action will be taken. More over, what answer will you give to the nation who has put all these soldiers under your command to safe guard the borders. Let say, what your play book will say then?
