Tennis: Atiq advances to second round

KARACHI: Arham Atiq, Fahad Masood and Ahmed Javed cruised into the men’s singles second round of the ITC Tennis Open that began in Islamabad yesterday. Atiq defeated Shehroze Rohail 6-3, 6-2, while Javed outplayed Richard 6-2, 6-1. Hamza bin Asif defeated Ayaz Qazi 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. Asif also defeated Salar Khan 6-0, 6-0 in the boy’s U18 singles event. In other matches, Babar Ali Akbar overcame Asjad Etizaz 6-3, 6-1, Abid Ali Akbar thrashed Ahmed Murad 6-1, 6-0 and Masood beat Faisal Kamran 7-5, 6-2. Top-seed Aqeel Khan will begin his campaign at the tournament today, while the women’s and men’s event doubles draw will be revealed today.
