LAHORE / ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik clarified on Saturday that some containers carrying items for the US embassy in Kabul, which had crossed over from Pakistan into Afghanistan on Friday, were not a sign of the Nato supply route being reopened.

Speaking after a meeting with the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Syed Munawar Hassan at JI headquarters Mansoora, Malik said negotiations, on the guidelines proscribed by the Parliamentary review, were still underway, and no decision had been taken yet to reopen them.

Explaining the US containers which crossed over on Friday, the Interior Minister said containers containing goods go to Afghanistan through Pakistan under the Transit Trade Agreement TTA agreement between the two countries.

Malik said JI Ameer Hassan has been invited for talks with President Asif Zardari at Aiwane-e- Sadr on important national issues including the resumption of Nato supply line and law and order situation in the country.

He said the PPP and JI agree on the point that there should be no drone attacks in Pakistan. Both Houses of Parliament and all the provincial assemblies‚ through their resolutions demanded that drone attacks should not take place. This makes it the unified demand of the entire nation.

Parliament’s guidelines not a stumbling block

The vice president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), the largest coalition partner for the Pakistan Peoples Party in the Parliament said on Saturday that the recommendations of the joint session of Parliament provide broader prospect to the government to engage with the United States to renew its relationship for future.

A former senator and a leading lawyer, S M Zafar said in a statement, “I do not see the recommendations of the Parliament as a hurdle in negotiating and determining the strategic relations between these two old allies [Pakistan and United States]“.

He said it was important to steer through the delicate relationship between the US and Pakistan.

He said the points contained in the recommendations were the ideal to be ultimately achieved by proceeding step by step.

He said, accordingly, the Federal Government had the final authority under the Constitution by virtue of Article 97 read with Clause-3 of Fourth Schedule which deals with the external affairs and agreements with other countries, to devise the best strategy in the national interest.

Zafar suggested, “in the present circumstances, it will be appropriate that the Federal Government takes other stockholders into confidence by extending ex-officio membership ofthe Cabinet Defence Committee.”

    The people of Pakistan are yet again kept in darkness by the rulers of this country. Pakistan has officially stopped the supply routes of the NATO forces but unofficially the supply routes remain open. Nato supplies are smuggled across durand lines by the smugglers who are allowed by the government and these smugglers are given protection by the security agencies of the country. The only difference is that US is now paying more.
    85% of everything used (inlcuding rations, ammo and fuel) by Nato forces are supplied through Pakistan and if Pakistan stops supply routes for one day Nato forces automatically come to half rations immediately. We should keep this thing in mind that soliders of Nato forces are not like soldiers of Pakistan army, Nato soldiers are only fighting in afghanistan because they are paid extra and if their rations and other supplies are cut down then they stop working.Recommend

    @no need: Nice Research.

    But then again, shouldn't we worry more about the violence and loss of innocent life that comes from extremism which is holding hostage at least Pakistani and Afghan people if not the entire humanity. Now that is more urgent than worrying about blocking the food supply of an old selfish friend, who happen to be helping us too while helping itself.

    Besides, we should not be afraid of “pathetic” terrorists who hit from dark and can’t talk or fight bravely in open, who indiscriminately kill innocent shoppers in market, Masjid & shrine attendees, school children, security personals and live off-of robbing banks & kidnapping for ransom.

    @NUPAK
    There is no friendship between Pakistan & USA behind the curtains, they are just two nations who are working together because both of them needs each other in order to gain their personal interests. It is an open fact that Pakistan would not like a hostile neighbour in the west as well and would care to have a Pro Pakistani governing body ( whether it’s a govt or a militia) after US leaves Afghanistan in 2014 and same way US would like to have a Pro US government in Afghanistan after it leaves in 2014 so that she can show the world that she has actually won the war. In order to achieve these objectives both countries are supporting terrorists and labeling them freedom fighers ,tribal allies , talibans or terrorists (whatever suits these countries). Terrorists who are fighting the Pakistan security agencies in tribal areas of Pakistan are funded by US and same way terrorists in Afghanistan fighting Nato forces are helped by Pakistani authorities.It’s a tit for tat situation.
    In a bigger picture both countries only care for t their personal interest and really don’t care how many innocent people are killed.Recommend

    Mr. President,
    If you are so smart that you don’t need any smart person around you who is attached to a working brain(not only for dictations), than why don’t you go for the history books( do a job worthy of Sitara-e-Imtiaz) by making Pakistan a formidable economy and a friendly nation for the world to respect and happy to do business with. You know, I tell my older kids when they are in trouble: The responsibility lies with the “smartest one”. Also as a business person I keep people “smarter” than me__ around me.

    The war against terrorism has so far remained confined in Afghanistan . Now the international force is willing to hit its root in Pakistan and for that sake opening of route will give them well exposed target . Pakistan has to open the supply line for nato .
