PITTSBURGH: With just three finalists present among 1,549 students, two Pakistani teenagers managed to snag a fourth place, $500 award at the Grand Awards Ceremony of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair on Friday in Pittsburgh.
The project titled: Energy Square for Cattle, created by Mahnoor Hassan, Shiza Gulab and Bushra Shahed of the Institute of Computer and Management Sciences in Peshawar took fourth prize in the Animal Sciences Category.
Hassan and Gulab were there to collect the prize for their project. They explained that their project is good for all livestock in times of natural disaster.
The fair concluded on Friday afternoon, in a confetti haze as the top prizewinner was announced. The winner was fifteen-year-old Jack Andraka from the US state of Maryland who created a Non-Invasive Pancreatic Cancer Detection Tool.
The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the largest of its kind, is a program of the non-profit Society for Science and the Public (SSP) and encourages young innovators to engage in math and science.

@ Saqib, I checked the website of the competition and they are not in the press release of grand prize winners but in the next list, the full list of winners.. So they are in the list. However, there is some embellishment in this news item. They did not get "4th place" in the competition, rather within the Animal Sciences category, they were awarded one of the fourth prizes. There are multiple winners of each prize, so if you look at their listing, they are actually in 20th place within the animal sciences category. Definitely still something to be very proud of, but not sure what the point is in exxagerating about it in the first place in this article.
Pakistani media has developed a habit of publishing self congratulatory news without confirming the authenticity of the same. While it is laudable that young students, and that too girls, represented Pakistan in a technology fair, the associated embellishments are reprehensible. A very quickly research reveals that while three top awards were handed out to finalists, 17 awards were handed out for "best of category". Each of these awards was of $5,000. None of these was won by Pakistan.
There are always some news coming from Individual Pakistanis who make us proud and show the world that we are a tallented and energetic nation . Unfortunately all the hard work and dedication is shadowed by the act of our corrupt leaders and Beaurocrates , who are selling Pakistan's Pride and Ego inch by inch - May Allah bless these heroes , who try their level best to keep the Flag High .
