KARACHI: This is with reference to Pervez Hoodbhoy’s article “Let us become — proudly — bayghairat”. Ghairat has destroyed us at the national level as well as in our private lives. The damage caused by the ghairat brigade is obvious for all to see. Men get the licence to behave like animals under the cover of ghairat.
Killing your wife, sister or mother and describing the act as one carried out in the name of honour is considered socially acceptable behaviour in our society. Women in Pakistan are the biggest victims of the ghairat of men.

I think we should remove the word Ghairat from Urdu dicionary then everybody including our honorable Hoodbhoy will be satisfied.

@ashar: No, no. Just removing this word from dictionary won’t help. You have got to remove the urge to kill others in any name or pretense. What does such savage act have got to do with “Honour” or ‘ghairat, I ask you.
“Behave like animals”—-which animals?! Animals (even they) don’t go around harming their kins—-such “Honour” is our sole entitlement —– such barbarity is unique to us and no animals can compete with us in this trait.
