Smith stuns Chennai in IPL

Mumbai post nerve-wracking two-wicket win.

Needing 14 to win off the final three balls, Dwayne Smith smashed a six, four and another boundary as Mumbai Indians posted a nerve-wracking two-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ben Hilfenhaus could only stand and watch as his final three deliveries were dispatched by the West Indies international who remained unbeaten on a nine-ball 24.

Mumbai, chasing 174 to win, were indebted to Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma who added 126 for the second wicket to take the team to 134 in the 16th over. Tendulkar was dismissed for a whirlwind 44-ball 74, while Sharma made 60 off 46 deliveries.

After their dismissals, it looked like Chennai would register a come-from-behind win but Smith ensured that the defending champions lost their sixth game in 12 matches of the ongoing IPL — his performance also earning him the man-of-the-match award.

Hilfenhaus, who conceded 18 in his first three overs, saw the required 16 plundered off his bowling in the final over to finish with two for 34.

Earlier, Chennai were off to a good start with Murali Vijay making a 29-ball 41. However, Lasith Malinga and RP Singh shared six wickets between them to dent Chennai’s charge at a bigger total.

Dwayne Bravo also contributed a useful 40, while Suresh Raina made 36.
