JAIPUR: A court here Thursday issued summoned Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan to appear before it May 26 in connection with a complaint against him for publicly smoking at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match, a lawyer said.
The Bollywood star had allegedly smoked while watching the IPL match between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders April 8.
“Smoking publicly is banned in Rajasthan since 2000 under the Rajasthan Prevention of Smocking Act. However, Shah Rukh Khan was smoking publicly in front of thousands of spectators. The actor was broadcast live while smoking on the TV channel which was showing the match,” said lawyer Nem Singh Rathore who filed the complaint on behalf of Jaipur Cricket Academy director Anand Singh Rathore.
“The court of the additional chief judicial metropolitan magistrate today (Thursday) issued a summon to Shah Rukh Khan after taking cognizance of the complaint. The actor has been directed to appear before the court May 26,” he said.
The lawyer said that spectators were being allowed into the stadium only after frisking.
“Police was confiscating any objectionable items including cigarettes while frisking. However, it seems Shah Rukh was allowed to carry the cigarette packet into the stadium which is negligence on part of police also,” the complainant said.
Shah Rukh is the co-owner of the Kolkata side.

IT might come as a surprise in that country but many decent societies are in the process and various stages of banning smoking especially in public places.
Surprise shown by us pakistanies makes sense…… we have no regard for public or law…

Looks like Indian courts want the some attention from media as in Pakistan

Oh please…spare me the drama of bashing Pakistan for everything…even in U.S. public smoking is banned in handful of states…it is worth going against smoking if rest of the causes of smoke from pollution are under control…when was the last time you rode a bi-cycle behind a bus or a truck in Pakistan?

Not ridiculous at all. In many parts of the world, smoking in public places is not allowed as is the case in Rajasthan. Now if a celebrity like Shah Rukh openly flouts the law and does so on TV, it would definitely send the message that the law is only in name. In any case this was not a Suo moto notice by the court – a petitioner appealed in public interest. Not sure why you think it is ridiculous.

I agree with you partially. This blog referred to something that happened i India and there was no need to drag Pakistan in it. Having said that I am unable to agree with your thought process that unless all other causes of pollution are eliminated there should be no ban on smoking and if there is one it is Okay to disregard it.

Time to ask such questions is before the law is passed. Once, it becomes the law, it is no longer under discussion. You can lampoon it, mock it till you are blue in your face, yet you are subject to it. It can be repealed, or changed only by amendments to it by a legislative body. It can also be challenged by self-righteous idiots by flouting it as in this case, with the necessary consequences to follow. Recently, this Khan embarrassed the country by making a big brouhaha at being subjected to routine security questioning in the US. Even the revered President Abdul Kalaam went through that without demur. Muslims have this quaint expectation that the universe around them should bend and make special allowances for them just because they are Muslim. Salman Khan is embroiled in two cases; of killing people by driving while under the influence over them while they were sleeping and hunting a protected species of deer in an area where people have protected even trees by standing between those who would cut them and those trees.
The only sensible Khan in all that wilderness is Aamir!

I second that. Aamir is the only khan in Bollywood worthy of respect as a human being. One of the other khans is a confirmed woman beater who gave a black eye to his girlfriend who wisely dumped him after that and SRK’s ego is bigger than gengiz khans empire. Even with all the politics which SRK plays, he is no match for aamir when it comes to the boxoffice if you look at the figures for 2009 and 2010. The best part is that Aamir does his boxoffice magic with very good movies of substance unlike SRK who depends on entertainment than substance to sell movies.
