Roadside encroachments

Letter April 25, 2012
Culture of roadside encroachments is a lingering problem in Karachi. Various administrations failed to end the menace.

KARACHI: The constant rise in illegal encroachments on roads, streets and footpaths have created a lot of problems for motorists, commuters and pedestrians. The culture of roadside encroachments is a lingering problem in Karachi and various administrations, during their tenures, failed to end the menace. Busy areas, including Empress Market and Regal, have become a nightmare for motorists, commuters and pedestrians as 60 to 80 per cent of the streets and footpaths are encroached upon illegally.

I request the relevant authorities to clear the streets of Karachi from illegal encroachments so that the city can have a civilised urban look.
