Consumer court: Ceramics shop sued for ‘selling bad tiles’

Petitioner bought tiles worth Rs21,978 with a three-year guarantee that the tiles would not fade or discolour.

A consumer court on Monday issued notice to the proprietor of Classic Ceramics for May 2 in a suit seeking damages of Rs103,178 from him for allegedly selling substandard tiles.

Petitioner Naveed Iqbal submitted that on September 12, 2011, he bought tiles worth Rs21,978 from Classic Ceramics with a three-year guarantee that the tiles would not fade or discolour.

But the tiles developed black spots within three weeks, ruining the look of his new house and causing him “mental agony”.

He said he had approached the respondent for a refund or replacement but to no avail. He asked the court to direct the respondent to pay him Rs103,178 in damages, including the tiles’ cost.

Classic Ceramics manager Muhammad Kamran rejected the charges. He told The Tribune the complainant had purchased white tiles and been told to use white cement to lay them. But he used black cement, which caused the black spots on the tiles, he said.
