PESHAWAR: In a city where there is a roadblock at every corner, terrorist attacks regular fare, it is surprising that not a lot of people are aware of the rescue service, which has at times meant the difference between life and death for city dwellers.

To create awareness amongst the masses for better utilisation of 1122 services, “Rescue Week” will be observed in Peshawar City.

In a meeting at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chamber of Commerce and Industries, headed by Provincial Minister for Labour and Man-power, Sher Azam Wazir, the Director General of Emergency and Rescue services 1122, Dr Shamul Haq, briefed the participants on the free services that rescue 1122 was providing for the last two years.

They said that there were a number of people who were still unaware of the facility, hence, a rescue week to create awareness for the service in the provincial metropolis was necessitated to inform the common man about the organisation and its capabilities.

The Rescue Week will be observed from April 23 to April 28. During the campaign, owners of factories, presidents of various labour unions and people in different parts of the city will be briefed on how to contact the Rescue 1122 service and minimise the damage caused by accidents, natural calamity or incidents of violence.

Rescue 1122 needs to gather funds from corporations in Peshawar, elsewhere to develop a masses awareness program. It should be robust and involve road users, motorists, children [school-going], transporters [buses], truckers. Add a little "masala" to it.

If this is not achieved soon, than we are just sitting duck paying for an ineffective service. Wasting resources.
