Probe clears Indian state leader over anti-Muslim riots

NEW DELHI: An investigation team appointed by India’s Supreme Court has found no evidence against Gujarat’s chief minister over deadly anti-Muslim riots in the state a decade ago, a court said Tuesday.

Narendra Modi has been accused by rights groups of having turned a blind eye to the violence that swept the state in 2002 and claimed as many as 2,000 lives, and of failing to bring to justice the perpetrators of the killings.

“According to the Special Investigation Team, no offence has been established against” Modi or any of the 57 others listed in the complaint, the magisterial court said, reported by the Press Trust of India.

The announcement was a boost for Modi, a prominent member of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and seen as a potential candidate to be India’s prime minister in the 2014 general elections.

The complaint had been filed by Zakia Jafri, widow of a former Congress Muslim lawmaker, Eshan Jafri, who was burnt to death along with 68 other people by a mob in a housing colony in Gujarat.

Zakia Jafri had filed a complaint against Modi, his ministerial colleagues, top police officials and members of the BJP, accusing them of conspiracy in the riots and the Supreme Court ordered an inquiry into the allegations.

Modi’s lawyer called the allegations against his client “absurd.”

The decision by the Special Investigation Team comes as Modi is set to run for a fourth term in office in elections in the western state, known as one of India’s most industrialised, due to be held later this year.

The decision came after an Indian court convicted 23 people on Monday over the massacre of nearly two dozen Muslims during the riots in Gujarat state.

Some 31 Muslims were found guilty last year on murder and conspiracy charges for the train attack in which 59 Hindu devotees were killed that sparked the anti-Muslim riots.

Hindu mobs seeking revenge rampaged through Muslim neighbourhoods in several cities across Gujarat during three days of bloodshed that witnessed some of India’s worst religious violence since independence from Britain in 1947.

Modi got another boost last year when a US Congressional research paper hailed his governance track record and called him the “likely” prime ministerial candidate for the BJP in the 2014 national elections.

Before all the Pakistanis go berserk over this, pls also read this line – The decision came after an Indian court convicted 23 people on Monday over the massacre of nearly two dozen Muslims during the riots in Gujarat state. – it is the same judiciary that has sentenced these people.

The only conclusion then is that the Indian Supreme Court is hand in glove with this mass murderer, whose murderus exploits have been detailed by the International media.

He should be sent to Hague to ensure a fair trail.

The charge against Modi was politically motivated and baseless. Its was part of Congress parties communal vote politics. Many hundred Hindus and Muslims died in the riots. It was not one-sided. More than 100 of Modi’s policemen too died trying to protect the innocent. So if Modi’s policeforce was not protecting the people ( Hindus and Muslims from rioters ) , how come so many policemen died ? They gave the ultimate sacrifice trying to protect the Muslims in many cases.
While the riots were a blemish on Modi administration, its also a fact that no riots have happened in Gujrat for last 5-6 years. That’s too his credit too. In fact Modi now enjoys a good amount of support among the Muslim community too.
The same courts that exonerated Modi have also found atleast 23 guilty in this particular case. Many others have been found guilty and punished in other cases. The number of people who have been punished by the courts for rioting now exceeds 300.
    Thats very commendable.

Hardly anyone in India questions the integrity of the supreme court. Modi’s role during the riots, can be said “deplorable” but not of a conspiring nature. In fact Muslims in Gujarat are far more well off then other Indian states. Modi has overall suffered due to this whole episode. Had Gujarat riots not happened, he would have been an obvious PM candidate thanks to unprecedented economic development in the state, while now his name is taken by BJP only in hushed tones. In 2011, Vibrant Gujarat Summit, the state received $462 Bn worth of domestic and foreign investments. That alone is more than twice the size of GDP of Pakistan.Recommend

    To all Pakistanis..

Just tell me what will happen if a group of Pakistani Hindus burned a train full of pilgrims returning from Haj in Lahore??

The same thing happened in Gujarat…It has been proved in court that it was a group of Muslims who burnt the train containing Hindu pilgrims…and some of the Hindus went on a killing spree and in return few muslims retaliated…

It was a shameful incident in the secular India…But it happened and people are getting over it…The riot was actually controlled in 1 week because of police’s swift action…
Gujarat police made a preventive arrest of 17,947 Hindus and 3,616 Muslims.
Nearly 10,000 rounds of bullets were fired in police shootings that killed 93 Muslims and 77 Hindus..

Modi was implicated by Congress party to tarnish his image after his brilliant work in restoring normalcy after 2001 earthquake…

In fact, there are more muslim supporters in Gujarat for Modi than against him…Gujarati muslims have better per capita income than Gujarati hindus and Gujarati muslims have better captia income than muslims from any other state..

    http://www.rediff.com/news/slide-show/slide-show-1-muslims-in-gujarat-have-accepted-modis-governance/20110918.htm

Hindus have always been peaceful with Muslims even during provocation…For eg,just 3 days ago,a group of muslims allegedly threw beef pieces inside a Hindu temple in Old Hyderabad to taunt them…But the police were swift in preventing any form of riots and ordered an indefinite curfew….

The very deplorable sikh riots in 1984 were preceded with 5-6 years of khalistani militant massacre of Hindus in Punjab. Thousands of hindus were brutally murdered over those 5-6 years and not a single anti-sikh riot happened. Then in Oct 1984, following assasination of Mrs Gandhi, those criminal riots exploded in fury, because they were preceded by 5-6 years of anti-Hindu killings by khalistani militants. Those riots resulted in death of many innocent sikhs and is one of the darkest days of modern India. However, since then, not a single such riot has happened and Sikhs ( most Hindus consider sikhs as anathor sect of Hinduism ) are 100% part of Indian mainstream , from PM of India to chief of armed forces.

Actually no riots have happened in Gujarat for 10 years. The one thing many people forget is that Modi was in his position barely for a week when these riots erupted. Army was called within 3 days but by then the deaths had already occurred. Even 6 months later in 2002 October when 50+ devotees were killed in Akshardham temple in Gujarat’s capital, Modi ensured there were no retaliatory riots.

Gujarat Muslims have been voting for Modi since they have benefited from his non-corrupt leadership which provides bijli sadak pani to all. It is only COngress trying to keep its communal vote bank alive that has kept the issue alive.

Muslim persecution in India is an old tradition. It started with the massacre of Muslims when they were migrating to Pakistan and continues to this day in one form or the other. Look at the public service jobs or the corporate sector you will rarely find a Muslim employed there whereas going by the population mix they should have at least 20% representation, yet another form of persecution.
We tend to give more credit to Indian court of law because of how India has positioned it and how Indians markets India and Indian stuff. Believe it or not it’s much easier to nail a Christian, Sikh or a Muslim in India then to hold Hindu fundamentalist chief minister accountable. Talking of massacre, please do not forget Golden Temple saga and over a million Muslims massacred in Kashmir in the last three decades.
This is not to say that Pakistani courts are a glowing example of justice or that minorities are treated very well here but at least our supreme court has indicted the ruling Prime minister, declared ex-president proclaimed offender and are trying to hold the sitting president accountable.

I am not sure how you can hold a Chief Minister responsible for genocide when what occurred was 3 days of riot that the polic actively controlled after which he called in the army? IF he was anti-Muslim there were other opportunities for riots subsequently and he would not have prevented them.

BTW, when drones continue to hit Pak citizens and COAS whose job it is to defend Pakistanis does nothing to stop them, do you accuse him of genocide? And these drone attackshave continued for how long? Please understand that while riots were very unfortunate, you cannot blame someone of genocide when people of both sides died and the orignal provocation for the riots came from Muslims who were minorities in the country.

We firmly, completely believe that he did. All of India’s newspapers have reported just that, editorials have confirmed just that for all these years. But the man has been let off! Clearly India’s Supreme Court is a disgrace to the name of justice. Should Indians not focus on that part – on exposing the crime committed by the Supreme Court for its biased decision?!!!

It makes me laugh on your utter ignorance about the economy of Pakistan.

According CIA- The World Factbook Pakistan’s GDP (PPP) is $488 billion (2011 est.) whereas Gujarat’s GDP (PPP) is $104.87 which makes Pakistan more than 4 times richer than Gujarat in terms of the size of the economy. Maharashtra is the richest state in India with $224.12 GDP (PPP) .

That is such a huge crime, friends. We would not mind if he simply didn’t like Muslims – everyone has his likes or dislikes; or that he was incapable, or simply failed his duties – that is not unknown. Since then , for last 10 years, there has been no rioting and where evidence was found both Hindus and Muslims who participated in rioting have been arrested and punished.

Supreme Court of India appointed the members of Special Investigation Team from Gujrat Police who were under the administrative control of Narendra Modi. Here is a brief of Deputy Commissioner of Internal Security in the State Intelligence Bureau:

“senior IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s statement made before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had asked police officers to be indifferent to rioters during the 2002 massacre (I was there. Narendra Modi said let the people vent their anger, 19 February). On 22 April, Bhatt filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court to this effect.

Bhatt was the Deputy Commissioner of Internal Security in the State Intelligence Bureau when the post- Godhra riots took place. More than 1,200 people were killed across Gujarat in the riots. Bhatt said he had shared the information about the controversial meeting with the SIT, but the team neither took him seriously, nor did it follow up on other crucial leads that could have helped establish the role of Modi and other ministers in the riots.”

    .
The following, from the above Article, is most important :
    .
“Some 31 Muslims were found guilty last year on murder and conspiracy charges for the train attack in which 59 Hindu devotees were killed that sparked the anti-Muslim riots”
    .
You must realize that the normal Aam Janta Hindu-Muslim Relationship is not at all under strain and both the Religious Groups get along fine.
    .
However, the Political and Religious Leaderships of the Muslims egged-urged-encouraged on by the Kriminal Kaangress Kammunist Klan Politicians – you must appreciate that the Babri Mosque issue was solved with the provision of an alternative site which was accepted by the Muslims – of the Rajiv Gandhi, V P Singh Ilk of “Vote Bank Seekers” who over turned the decision of the Local Muslims and created discord where none existed leading to the situation wherein the Muslim Mob (surely encouraged and misguided by the KKKK Politicians) in Godhra set fire to a Railway Compartment-Coach.
    .
I am confident that if the Indian Muslims are left to themselves to sort out any problems with their counterparts in the Hindu Community then you will find that the KKKK Politicians are wiped out from the Indian Political Map.
    .
It may be wishful thinking but I am sure it has a very very great chance of success.
    .
