NEW DELHI: An investigation team appointed by India's Supreme Court has found no evidence against Gujarat's chief minister over deadly anti-Muslim riots in the state a decade ago, a court said Tuesday.
Narendra Modi has been accused by rights groups of having turned a blind eye to the violence that swept the state in 2002 and claimed as many as 2,000 lives, and of failing to bring to justice the perpetrators of the killings.
"According to the Special Investigation Team, no offence has been established against" Modi or any of the 57 others listed in the complaint, the magisterial court said, reported by the Press Trust of India.
The announcement was a boost for Modi, a prominent member of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and seen as a potential candidate to be India's prime minister in the 2014 general elections.
The complaint had been filed by Zakia Jafri, widow of a former Congress Muslim lawmaker, Eshan Jafri, who was burnt to death along with 68 other people by a mob in a housing colony in Gujarat.
Zakia Jafri had filed a complaint against Modi, his ministerial colleagues, top police officials and members of the BJP, accusing them of conspiracy in the riots and the Supreme Court ordered an inquiry into the allegations.
Modi's lawyer called the allegations against his client "absurd."
The decision by the Special Investigation Team comes as Modi is set to run for a fourth term in office in elections in the western state, known as one of India's most industrialised, due to be held later this year.
The decision came after an Indian court convicted 23 people on Monday over the massacre of nearly two dozen Muslims during the riots in Gujarat state.
Some 31 Muslims were found guilty last year on murder and conspiracy charges for the train attack in which 59 Hindu devotees were killed that sparked the anti-Muslim riots.
Hindu mobs seeking revenge rampaged through Muslim neighbourhoods in several cities across Gujarat during three days of bloodshed that witnessed some of India's worst religious violence since independence from Britain in 1947.
Modi got another boost last year when a US Congressional research paper hailed his governance track record and called him the "likely" prime ministerial candidate for the BJP in the 2014 national elections.

Sorry for expecting too much from your intellects. "Operations Jackpot" wasn't the code name for a scientific expedition to Mars. It was in fact a code for an operation to break Pakistan, and the link given describes the operational details the Indian conspiracy.

I didn't do the math, rather gave the authentic sources for the counts, which are officially acknowledged by Indian Government, while actual numbers are at least three times bigger. And, of course, the numbers are super big, much much bigger than you'd like to admit.
Regarding Bangladesh, as for as I know, it was less than 50,000 for Mukti-Bahni insurgents who were attacking law enforcement personnel, killing Bengali and non-Bengali civilians who were supporting Pakistan, burning state buildings and involved in looting. Around 30,000 were also killed by Mukti-Bahni insurgents. You need to study the "The Indian Conspiracy to Break Pakistan", and see how heinously and without any legal authority your Indian Government attacked and intervened into the internal affairs of a sovereign country. But never mind, time never remains the same.

Where would the Hindus learn to hate? There is no equivalent of islamiyat in Hinduism nor do priests preach at temples. What part of riot do Pakistanis dont understand ?? The riot was started by a muslim mob in Godhra. In subsequent rioting, both Hindus and muslims died. It took 2-3 days to stop the rioting. Since then , for last 10 years, there has been no rioting and where evidence was found both Hindus and Muslims who participated in rioting have been arrested and punished. So stop making nonsensical arguments and try to save what you have in Pakistan where Shia and Sunni killings are heppening everyday from Karachi to Baltistan.

@blithe: It was a commission appointed by Supreme Court that ruled that Godhra Train Fire was accidental and not set by Muslims. One cannot accuse Court of Bias in its ruling that one does not like and praise other rulings that are of their liking. Modi not stupid to leave any evidences of his and his administrators involvement that later can be used against him. Courts are helpless if no smoking guns are found

According CIA- The World Factbook Pakistan's GDP (PPP) is $488 billion (2011 est.) whereas Gujarat's GDP (PPP) is $104.87 which makes Pakistan more than 4 times richer than Gujarat in terms of the size of the economy. Maharashtra is the richest state in India with $224.12 GDP (PPP) .

Man, we don't care about the 'secular image' of any country. Either the man used state machinery to organize a pogrom killing thousands of people or he did not. We firmly, completely believe that he did. All of India's newspapers have reported just that, editorials have confirmed just that for all these years. But the man has been let off! I have stated multiple times that while unfortunate incidents can happen everywhere there is no official tolerance in India for persecution of people of any minority faith in India. If you see what Babloo has written, police was actively working trying but failing to do riot control. I am not sure how you can hold a Chief Minister responsible for genocide when what occurred was 3 days of riot that the polic actively controlled after which he called in the army? IF he was anti-Muslim there were other opportunities for riots subsequently and he would not have prevented them.
BTW, when drones continue to hit Pak citizens and COAS whose job it is to defend Pakistanis does nothing to stop them, do you accuse him of genocide? So yes, Gujarat is a regrettable episode in Indian history - and the reason why you continue to hear so much about it is that it hasn't happened since. Less people died in Gujarat (Hindu + Muslim)than in Karachi last year. Guys, what has happened in Gujarat happens every day in Pakistan - human rights are violated and civil liberties are thrown to the dogs; whatever few minorities you have are disappearing as we speak; the ones that remain will be kidnapped, raped, murdered or converted; you have not even passed a Hindu marriage act in the land where Hinduism was born; no one speaks in the defence of minorities - and you guys never even think of charging your PM/ CM with culpability in this saga of violence. Cleared of charges or not, Modi will NEVER become the Prime Minister of India. If BJP makes the mistake to putting him on the ticket, I doubt if they could win even 10% of the seats.
By the way, for people arguing about muslim persecution in India - here's an eye opener for you. Muslim localities in Indian cities/towns, where they are in a majority, are no go areas for Hindus. This is what they do to the Hindus in a Hindu majority country. I am no Modi fan, but I have no love lost for the Islam-supremacistic fanatic muslims of any country.

@gp65: it's funny how your objectivity and intellectualism goes down the drain when it comes to your own culprits. Your two defences : first, No riots have happened for the last 10 years in Gujrat therefore Modi is not guilty in the one that actually happened. second .Modi was new to administration and didn't know what to do for three days,therefore he is not guilty. and someone else said because 23 others less important have been convicted therefore Modi must be "not guilty". All ridiculous arguments to say the least.

Let me ask my Indian friends.
If there is no evidence against Narendar Modi that he utilized the state machinery to massacre thousands of Muslims in STATE-ORGANIZED POGROM, then how come ALL Indian newspapers and commentators for ALL these years, without exception, have been arguing that he did?
Please explain, some Indian (not including Dee Cee and Indian Heights who are honorable people and thus agree with us).

Thank you, Dee Cee. These Indians claim that their Supreme Court provides any justice. That is nonsense. Pakistani Supreme Court is much better in this regard. At least Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry takes a proactive stance. Then these Indians have the face to ask Pakistan that their claims about Professor Saeed Hafiz, a most respectable man in Pakistan, be believed that not the considered opinions of Pakistani judges.
Shame on Indians. And Dee Cee - may Indians like you live long. Once dynamic leaders like Imran Khan and Professor Saeed Hafiz in Pakistan and excellent people like you in India gain power, the two countries can have real friendship, based on equality and mutual respect.
Muslim persecution in India is an old tradition. It started with the massacre of Muslims when they were migrating to Pakistan and continues to this day in one form or the other. Look at the public service jobs or the corporate sector you will rarely find a Muslim employed there whereas going by the population mix they should have at least 20% representation, yet another form of persecution. We tend to give more credit to Indian court of law because of how India has positioned it and how Indians markets India and Indian stuff. Believe it or not it’s much easier to nail a Christian, Sikh or a Muslim in India then to hold Hindu fundamentalist chief minister accountable. Talking of massacre, please do not forget Golden Temple saga and over a million Muslims massacred in Kashmir in the last three decades. This is not to say that Pakistani courts are a glowing example of justice or that minorities are treated very well here but at least our supreme court has indicted the ruling Prime minister, declared ex-president proclaimed offender and are trying to hold the sitting president accountable.

There is no prosecutable evidence against Modi, so the SC's clearance is justified in order to upheld rule of law and principles of natural justice. However, i feel sorry for Zakia Jafri, its really sad that the culprits didn't get the punishment due to lack of evidence which they truly deserved !!

HE ensured that in 10 years subsequently there have been no riots despite sever provocations such as killing 50+ devotees in Akshardham temple, terrorist bombing in Ahmedabad etc. The number of people that died in Gujarata in 2002 die in Karachi target killing every year. Who has been held accountable. HAve the killings stopped?

Actually no riots have happened in Gujarat for 10 years. The one thing many people forget is that Modi was in his position barely for a week when these riots erupted. Army was called within 3 days but by then the deaths had already occurred. Even 6 months later in 2002 October when 50+ devotees were killed in Akshardham temple in Gujarat's capital, Modi ensured there were no retaliatory riots.
Gujarat Muslims have been voting for Modi since they have benefited from his non-corrupt leadership which provides bijli sadak pani to all. It is only COngress trying to keep its communal vote bank alive that has kept the issue alive.

Judge for yourself, if this means one sided riots or were Muslim mobs were as much rioting , beginning with Gidhra as miscreant Hindu mobs.
Preventive arrests of 17,947 Hindus and 3,616 Muslims were made. In total 27,901 Hindus and 7,651 Muslims were arrested. Nearly 10,000 rounds of bullets were fired in police shootings to disperse rioting mobs, that killed 93 Muslims and 77 Hindus

I don't know where you get those numbers. The size of the Gujrati economy is about $100billion at 1700$ per capita. Furthermore, the total FDI coming into India is about $130billion. I can't see where that $462billion came from. That's more than 1/4th of the entire Indian economy. Those figures are a stretch even in Indian rupee terms. Or is that what your state media feeds you?

The very deplorable sikh riots in 1984 were preceded with 5-6 years of khalistani militant massacre of Hindus in Punjab. Thousands of hindus were brutally murdered over those 5-6 years and not a single anti-sikh riot happened. Then in Oct 1984, following assasination of Mrs Gandhi, those criminal riots exploded in fury, because they were preceded by 5-6 years of anti-Hindu killings by khalistani militants. Those riots resulted in death of many innocent sikhs and is one of the darkest days of modern India. However, since then, not a single such riot has happened and Sikhs ( most Hindus consider sikhs as anathor sect of Hinduism ) are 100% part of Indian mainstream , from PM of India to chief of armed forces.

Hindus have always been peaceful with Muslims even during provocation...For eg,just 3 days ago,a group of muslims allegedly threw beef pieces inside a Hindu temple in Old Hyderabad to taunt them...But the police were swift in preventing any form of riots and ordered an indefinite curfew....
Jiye Narendra Modi. The charges against him were baseless and politically motivated. No other state in, not only India but also entire SE Asia offers more better opportunity than the state of Gujrat in India. Gujrat has been growing at more than 12% yearly under Modi's administration benefiting all the Gujratis regardless of their casts or religion. Modi is the future of india.

By the way, where did you get the figures of 100 policemen killed protecting the Muslims. Had they had tried half of that effort, there would have been no riots to start with.

The charge against Modi was politically motivated and baseless. Its was part of Congress parties communal vote politics. Many hundred Hindus and Muslims died in the riots. It was not one-sided. More than 100 of Modi's policemen too died trying to protect the innocent. So if Modi's policeforce was not protecting the people ( Hindus and Muslims from rioters ) , how come so many policemen died ? They gave the ultimate sacrifice trying to protect the Muslims in many cases. While the riots were a blemish on Modi administration, its also a fact that no riots have happened in Gujrat for last 5-6 years. That's too his credit too. In fact Modi now enjoys a good amount of support among the Muslim community too. The same courts that exonerated Modi have also found atleast 23 guilty in this particular case. Many others have been found guilty and punished in other cases. The number of people who have been punished by the courts for rioting now exceeds 300. Thats very commendable.
The only conclusion then is that the Indian Supreme Court is hand in glove with this mass murderer, whose murderus exploits have been detailed by the International media.
He should be sent to Hague to ensure a fair trail.
Before all the Pakistanis go berserk over this, pls also read this line - The decision came after an Indian court convicted 23 people on Monday over the massacre of nearly two dozen Muslims during the riots in Gujarat state. - it is the same judiciary that has sentenced these people.
