Target killings : Two PPP men shot dead, total death toll 82 since PIB murder

Activists were attacked in Baldia and at Abul Hasan Isphahani Road.

KARACHI: The total death toll during the current spate of violence in the city has now reached 82, with the addition of two more deaths on Monday. The wave began after two activists of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) were killed at their home in PIB Colony on March 27.

Among the victims, seven were from MQM and Pakistan Peoples Party each and 10 were from Awami National Party.

The most recent victims of targeted attacks were two PPP activists. Another activist was also injured.

Syed Mukhtiar Shah, 36, was shot dead in Baldia Town. The police confirmed that he was targeted. SHO Tariq Islam said that Shah used to run his own school in Sector 9A in Baldia.

According to the victim’s brother, Fayyaz, three motorcyclists came to the school and two of them barged inside. They entered his office and sprayed him with bullets. SHO Islam said that Shah was shot six times, as evidenced by empty bullet casings were found from his office. He was associated with union council 11 in Baldia. He hailed from Abbottabad and used to be a member of Sunni Tehreek before he joined the PPP.

Shah’s family claims that he had no personal enmity with anyone.

Law and order situation in Baldia Town was tense as shops and businesses shut down. Rangers and police arrived to prevent the situation from getting worse.

In another incident, another PPP activist, Younus Pathan, was shot dead and Zahid Khan was injured when unidentified men opened fire at them at Abul Hassan Isphahani Road. Pathan lived in Metroville area and was father of three children. According to SHO Idrees Bangash, the victim was associated with PS-126 of Malir district. Pathan and Khan were shot at when they were going back home after attending the soyem of a student activist, Syed Hassan, who was killed three days ago.

FIR registered

After around 48 hours, the police registered the cases of the target killings three PPP workers, Farhan, alias Guddu, Nafees Siddiqui and Omar Hayat. They were shot dead at Urdu Chowk in Orangi Town. The FIR was lodged on the request of Farhan’s brother, Adnan, and eight unidentified people were nominated.
