Even though some international critics claimed that the 3D effect was barely noticeable, the numbers Titanic 3D has managed to tap within two to three days of its release are impressive. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Titanic 3D grossed a whopping $4.7 million at the American box office on Wednesday, which includes approximately $300,000 from Tuesday night premieres. Looking at the present progress of the film, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if Titanic beats the current box office king The Hunger Games both locally and internationally.
The original Titanic, considered by many as one of the most brilliantly shot romantic films after Gone with the Wind, earned a record-breaking $1.8 billion on the box office worldwide. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the conversion to 3D was worth $18 million and the makers are probably expecting a business of more than the conversion cost.
Interesting fact
The most romantic scene in the film, in which Jack paints Rose while she was wearing just the diamond necklace, was censored by the Pakistani Censor Board in 1997. However, this time around the makers eliminated the scene completely for Pakistani viewers, according to Mandviwalla Entertainment. On the other hand, the Indian Censor Board, that had censored intimate scenes in the 1997 edition, has allowed the bold scenes to go in the 3D version.
The re-release of the film also marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic which set sail on April 10, 1912.
